Ray Northway is a fine man. When you say 'one name kept cropping up' I was expecting you to say Hartech. Last time my car was in for a service they had 32 engine rebuilds on the go and are widely regarded as the best place to send a broken water cooled 911 on the planet. Many independents use them for their work, including quite well known garages. Their expertise and research is awesome.
It sounds like you've had a great job done, but do check out the Hartech guides on their website. Pretty thorough...

I will not be using an OPC services ever again. They are just profit driven, hand-tied workshops and almost arrogant in their approach. Ray will be looking after my car from now on.
It's worse than that, the Official Porsche Factory knows perfectly well how to avoid bore scoring on engines, it's not rocket science, it's inadequate flow at low engine revs causing overheated soft bores that score when you boot it from a temporary stop. The very fact that you had the entirely avoidable problem is extremely sad. Jaguar had a cylinder head problem a few years back, instead of letting it play out in the owners wallet they actually replaced the entire head during services, as a silent recall. That's how it should be done.
Thanks ScienceTeacher, Hartech look impressive but i'm in Hampshire so Bolton is a bit too far for me especially with Ray on my doorstep.
Paddy, my 997 C2S Cab is a '56 plate 2007. My car went to OPC Reading on the 14th January and I fought with them until the middle of February at which point it went to Ray. I got the car back on Wednesday this week and need to run it in now for a couple of hundred miles (no revs over 4000). I can't believe how much I missed it.
You're quite right, their whole stance is to put a new engine in. It's not a coincidence that a rebuild cost is the same as a new engine without the bonus of a two year warranty. If they open the engine and it takes longer than the allowed 40 hours labour then it eats in to their profits and the mechanic gets a black listing for not doing his job efficiently on time. They are a soulless, money making machine that couldn't give a toss about their customers once they've got your money. It's no surprise that they have a relatively high turnover of staff both within sales and technicians.
Globs, my company sells top marque German IT hardware to the broadcast market. The service my customers receive from them and us is second to none. Recently, we had an issue with several units of the same model and my manufacturer decided to swap out all 175 units at their own expense in case the problem escalated in a similar vein to what Jaguar did. That is how a manufacturer should treat their customers. I foolishly thought that Porsche, being a top marque manufacturer, would look to protect their reputation. I for one feel very let down. I will not feather Porsches nest any further but will support independent specialists such as Ray or Hartech and use them for all future care and purchases. I am not turned off the brand but I am adamant I will not support the OPC's.

Without e scouring every post.what are the tell tale signs of the failures.like borescore or imsfailure ?
Bore scoring causes excessive oil consumption and blue smoke.Ims failure is sudden and happens without warning. It sounds like a load of ball bearings rattling around in a barrel. When this happens, it's goodbye engine.

Thankfully mine doesn't use oil or water then or I would be worried.Ims failure is sudden and happens without warning. It sounds like a load of ball bearings rattling around in a barrel. When this happens, it's goodbye engine.
As for the bearing, that's not good. Mine had a modified ims bearing put in when they did a clutch on it 2 years before I bought it. I hope this does avoid the issue or is it still likely?
Hasn't had a lower temp thermostat fitted either.wonder if I should do it or just leave it be as its on 117k now
My engine number includes the letters "AT". I believe AT is the abbreviation for the German word Austausch, which means "exchange" in English.
My 996 was first registered in 2003 and its current engine dates from 2005/2006.
It might also be interesting to have a list of how many AT Engines there are out there?
How do I complete the poll?
