Not sure how this compares to Specialist prices but I've recently had the rear main seal, slave cylinder and intermediate shaft replaced at OPC Guildford under warranty and the print out states £1166.82, which I don't think is that bad if that's what it would have cost out of warranty. £151.49 in parts and £820.86 in labour/oil.

Mileage 43,988, build 05/2005 and always serviced at Porsche.

Why did they change the intermediate shaft?

That looks to me like they replaced the end housing, bolts and seals only? Not the ims or bearing?

Reply back from Porsche:

I have checked with Joe the technician who worked on your car and he confirmed that what we replaced was the failed and leaking items which are the common faults. There is absolutely no need to replace the shaft. I hope this helps.

Not sure if repost, but thought this may be of interest. Successful class action in the USA.
Porsche have agreed terms of settlement for the failure of IMS for porsche models 2001 through 2005.

Right that explains it then, they didn't replace the bearing or shaft.

And don't forget that Porsche do not recognise an issue with the ims.

Yes, it must have just been a chance seal leak, heat and play would never do that. Oh no. Nothing to see here.
As long as the owner doesn't invalidate the warranty by foolishly putting the wrong wiper blades or wearing the wrong Cologne on it should be fine.

I find this sort of thing often and to this day find it quite fustrating, bit like a clutch change and leave the weepy RMS,preventative maintaince will never save any one more money than on these units.

Just come off the 991 GT3 forum and noticed the 997 engine failure forum to which I would add my experiences from 2010 and although I expect you have heard at least some of it before, it MAY be of some interest.
In November 2009 Ipurchased a 997 C4S cab tiptronic privately registered December 2007 57 reg 13000 miles UK supplied 1 owner. This replaced my 997 C2 s coupe tiptronic 06 56 reg 27000 miles which had given no problems although had only been used for a few months and for 2000 miles approx.
I used the C4S for spirited A and B road weekend drives and it had benefited from a relatively sheltered life with its first owner. Just before Christmas 2009 I noticed a distinct knocking from the engine when hot. I booked the car in for its 2 year service at Porsche Bolton and asked them to identify the knocking noise mindful of the cars rapidly expiring remaining warranty period. I seem to remember the fault was diagnosed as piston slap with bore wear after New Year and Porsche Bolton rebuilt the engine (no warranty) although there was talk of a new engine which presumably would have had a warranty and therefore effectively cost them more. I was most impressed with the service received and have since taken a number of my later 911 s for service including a 2010 Gen2 S PDK and my current 2011 GTS PDK. The C4S was used regularly until sold at 19000 miles in August 2010 without any further engine problems.
As a point of interest, I have not encountered any problems whatsoever with either of the Gen 2 cars. I consider they are light years ahead of the Gen 1 s in terms of engine efficiency, performance and economy largely attributed to the PDK gearbox. I love the GTS which provides just the right mix of performance and usability.
Anyway, hope my experiences are of some interest especially having regard to the engine failure of my C4 S at such a low mileage.
