Hello PH, having a bit of bother with my window wipers.

Noticed today my window wiper sitting up more than usual, washed the windows to see if it would reset itself. And it does, sometimes, the window wipers have slowed down quite a bit too.

When I got home I thought I would try setting the wipers to the service position 'on', they did this OK, but when switched back to 'off' they didn't budge. They stayed in the 'on' position, the MMI reads 'off' for 5 seconds before changing back to 'on' so the MMI must know where is the blades are. The only way I can move the blades is to press the window wiper arm down, but this does not fully reset the blades. Had a quick google and it didn't turn up with much.

Anyone heard of this before? Possibly Tame Tech?

I'm hoping this is as easy as some sort of VAGCOM reset, and not something as bad as a new window wiper motor.

Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, your my only hope!

So if you start the engine, turn on the wipers on or use the washers, Do the wipers move and park in the service possition. Or do they not move at all and stay where they are.

They do move. They take the full sweep, but they don't return back to the proper position. They sit an inch or two above where they should rest.

They move fast on the way up, and slow on the way back.

It's just started doing this today.

Morning Update...

Driving to work this morning and the window wipers were moving normally, although they did not return fully to the bottom of the window.

Travelling at 70mph on the outside lane on the duel carriageway overtaking slower traffic in the rain my window wipers stopped dead at the bottom position, frantically switching the window wiper stalk did nothing.

About 10-15 seconds later they started working again.

Same amount of time later they stopped again, this time about 75% full sweep. This lasted about 20 seconds before they started working again.

Took my car to 2 different Audi Dealers who couldn't book my car in to next week, so I didn't bother.

On the way back to work, they have started to work perfectly. Seating in the fully down position and sweeping fully.

No problems since.

What the hell is going on!

Have a look under the plastic cover that cover the brake fluid reservior etc and see if there is a load of water in there, they may be getting into the wiper motor. The park switch, that tells them where to stop, is integral with the motor.

Update: Been diagnosed as seized wiper linkage.

Replacement is £178 with a new piece of trim costing £17 which stops the problem coming back. 2 hours labour.

If it needs a new piece of trim, then Audi have obviously identified this as a fault. Try asking them to contribute, especially if you have full service history and car is only just out of warranty

Many years out of warranty I'm afraid, 2005 A6, seems to be a theme developing here! I live in a costal town, no idea if that would accelerate the problem.

Just turned 125000 miles.

I am lucky and managed to diagnose & repair myself. My car sits in the my garage most of its life so that probly doesn't help. It only done 2k miles last year.

Such a common fault with several models across the VAG range.

My 1999 Seat Toledo had exactly the same issue.

Just a quick reply to an old topic just in case anyone is looking for the same answer as I was.
My wipers did exactly the same, they started to park slightly higher than normal and then became erratic eventually stopping completely in a downpour.
As a quick fix I sprayed deblock oil http://www.innotecworld.com/products/greases-lubri... on the wiper mechanism without stripping anything down and its worked a treat.
I'm guessing its not a long term fix but its lasted a few months and only takes moments to do.
PS I got the spray from eBay as the manufacturers only sell to the trade.
Worked great for me thought it was worth spreading the news.

Just another update the wipers are still ok so it seems to be quite a good fix but I will spay more of the oil on the linkage to see me through the winter.
Saves a lot of grief.
