Please could someone confirm the timescale in years and mileage that these should be changed in accordance with manurfacturers guidelines.

I'm looking at a 08 plate with 40k miles. The dealer (not VW) is saying the handbook says not due until 120k miles!! This sounds optamistic and expensive! In my head i have 4 years or 60k miles but not sure.

Also did all get re-called for coil packs and how would i know if the cam followers were worn?

Hoping to view this weekend.

Many thanks

I'm pretty sure the cambelt on the Mk5 GTI is 60k miles or 4 years whichever happens first. Some Diesel models are 120k miles but there is still the 4 year limitation. You also want to get the water pump changed at the same time.

The 28F5 coilpack recall only applied to cars upto 2007 after which the revised coilpacks were fitted in production.

Worn cam followers will make the engine sound "tappety" and reduce performance slightly.

great, thank you - i'm guessing £400 for belt and pump at a specialist. Could be a useful bargaining tool.

Current price atva dealer for cambelt, tensioner and water pump is £479 so I would have thought a good indie could do it for around £350

Yes it is 60k or 4 years.

The handbook is a mis-print. I bought my car with 75k on and it had not been done so got it trailered after I bought it to get done. Even with full vw service history it still hadn't been done for some reason.

I paid an indy £350 to replace it along with the water pump and tensioner.

Well it says the same in the handbook for our Mk6 - in fact I think it says inspect it at that mileage, not change it.

This is a scam by VW UK - the interval is different in different countries, and even in the UK it can different for the same engines depending on which VAG brand they're in.

I think audi quote 70k for the same engine?

It has the same mis-print in the A3 handbook, TFSI cambelt at 120k. Someone on audi-sport.net had a belt go at circa 100k but no recourse with VAG.

Well, of course, that's the danger. The belt should last the life of the car, but there's a danger that becomes a self-fulfilling if it breaks at high mileage!

I wonder what happens if the car has a belt change at 4yrs, then the belt breaks at 7yrs old? Does VW pick up the tab?

hmm, I will call a VW dealer and ask them outright. Seems ludicrous not to change it until 120k.

They'll tell you 4yrs and either 40 or 60K miles (or possibily 80K if you get someone really confused) so on the age basis they'll say it's due.

APS in Brackley are worth a shout for a belt change depending on where you live in Oxfordshire.

Interested to see what your VW dealer says. Handbooks both mk5 and mk6 say check at 120k but internet forums say 60k or 4/5 years. I just picked up a mk5 GTI with 67k on the clock and am now thinking I need to get it done now but when I asked the dealer (non VW) he said it doesn't need to be checked until 120k.

Ring customer services and speak to someone technical - they will give you the current answer, which does tend to change after the cars have been on the road a while. Manuals usually don't give a time based interval, just mileage assuming you do their idea of 'average' mileage

The interweb says 4yrs, my dealer told me 5 when I queried it. My mk5 gti ed30 is now 5.5yrs on 27k miles so it will be done in next few weeks.

The dealer wanted £479 for belt and pump but local seat/skoda dealer wants £399. VW dealer couldn't match them on price even though they offer a "price promise" as they would be making a loss at that price.

My local indies could not match the seat/skoda dealer price so worth a try.

Hi Guys, very new to the forum, the replies on this thread is very helpful. Loving my MK5 06 and bought it recently as an import here in NZ done 46000kms, vw dealer advised cambelt replacement at 60000 kms or 6 years. Hence way overdue in time. hopefully it wont snap till I recoup some funds for it.

I have a 57 plate on 73k miles . Only getting time belt done now. I get an oil / filter change every year. Changed the plugs at 60k. The air filter is 10 tyr old and immaculate. Ten year old exhaust and battery. And thats it ! Going like a rocket.
