Hello

A few questions for the masses - appreciate your help:

1.) I have a driving liicence pre 2000 - from what I've read that means I only require a DAS to get mobile? Does that mean I don't have to CBT? And hence it's a week to get a licence?

2.) What buyers tips do I need when buying a Desmo?

Thanks.

Let me get this right...

You want a Desmo as your first bike?

Do you know how much replacement fairings are for those?

I'm pretty sure that these are all out of their warranty period now (may be wrong)so the only thing you will need is a pretty strong sphincter, good health insurance and deep pockets

Re Desmo... How much riding experience have you got, it's a great bike but not a friendly bike.

Agreed, i'd probly not be going for that as a first bike. If you have to have something fast, buy something cheaper for a year or so.

You wouldn't get insured! There's only Ducati insurance who will insure them, you'll need a tracker also. I've got full NCB and live in a decent area it's way into 4 figures to insure.

You'll need at least a grand a year to service and the biggies will cost you a couple of G's!!

...that's assuming you can find any for sale

It will be a week to get a licence either way, as lots of direct access courses build in a CBT within the course time, for those that need to do them.

You know those threads in GG where some young spurt wants Z4M for his first car because he can afford the purchase price? And everyone tells him don't be a div, you'll never get the most out of it and you will crash it, get a fiesta instead.

But hey, congratulations where it's due for having the reddies to buy a Desmo at all.

.....plus how ever long it takes to get a sitting for the bike theory test too.
Can be 4-6 weeks in some areas, depending on time of year etc. I got lucky and was able to take a midweek mid-morning cancellation otherwise it would've been three weeks.

Isn't a licence a requirement for most trackdays? as proof you should know the basics of riding a bike?

I'm fairly sure an ACU license will suffice in place of a road license.

Saying that though I think the Desmo would be too loud for UK track days.
I can't remember having my license checked on Euro track days

As far as being a first bike, as i told many people when I was an instructor, throttle goes both ways.If he loves that particular bike, just let him grow into it!Its not near as twitchy throttle wise as many sportsbikes out there today. Also, fairings are repairable!;-) I agree wholeheartedly though about the sphincter and the deep pockets!!

Unless (and even if!) someone has just won the lottery, this has to be a pisstake of the highest order.

Well, if you've got the money, no reason to stick around on a little thing first apart from learning to carry corner speed, and as you'd have essentially a modified to make it road legal GP bike tat shouldn't be an issue...

Just remember buying it is the cheap part.

Depends which country. I'm sure there are some countries where a few well placed $100 bills can resolve that problem wink

What's the betting the OP wasn't refering to a Desmosedici but something else with the desmodromic valve system, which could be anything really!

More info OP please, if it is the former, good luck to you, certainly not the best choice for a first bike but if you can, go for it.

There's probably a Chinese 50cc scooter called a 'Desmo' laugh
