More 996 turbo love
Discussion
I know it's not particularly modest but here is my 'show off' thread for my new (to me) 996 turbo :-)
I've been searching for the right car for about 10 months - I wanted a manual in black on black with reasonable mileage and for a reasonable price - and it seems so did everyone else that was looking! I drove a few cars and almost went for silver but in the end I'm really glad I stuck to my guns and waited.
It's a Sept 2004 - 996 911 turbo in basalt black with black leather, 38000 miles (!) and full OPC service history.
I've done about 400 miles in it the week I've had it and I love it. It was posts like this that kept me going when I was looking for it and I hope it inspires someone hoping to make the decision to do the same. It's a truly amazing and special car that drives like new and when pushed seems to bend the laws of physics.
As far as I can tell it only needs a new splitter although I'm well aware of the things that go wrong and usually at a moments notice - I really must sort my breakdown cover!
Anyway thanks for reading.

Very nice! I spend far too much time looking at these in the classifieds, you do seem to get a very special car for a reasonable(ish) amount of money and they are probably the fastest way to reach and not obviously exceed the posted speed limit in the real world;) Bet you're feeling pretty chuffed with it
They are a great car and fantastic value for money at the moment, compare them to any other turbo Porsche variant at the moment, miles cheaper than any of them, and I think to drive they are as good or better than anything up to a 997, even then the 996 steering is better and the engine more tunable.
Yes the Earlier cars are prettier but once your bums in the seat the 996 turbo is an awesome car.
Yours looks very nice and so do the roads in the pictures.

That's exactly what I thought. I did seriously consider a 997 turbo but for about an extra £15k it didn't seem worth it. Plus it's my first Porsche so I need somewhere to go next! Yes the Earlier cars are prettier but once your bums in the seat the 996 turbo is an awesome car.

It was a nice trundle round the moors of County Durham, there were loads of nice photo opportunities but I was enjoying the drive too much to stop. Shame about the thick fog once I got to Hartside pass though.
Lovely car and i was one of the others looking for a lowish mileage manual either black/black or dark grey/black. And ideally some Ali packs inside to break up the doom and gloom, I see yours has the small Ali pack
Only ones I found myself getting tempted by were Turbo S at around 35k so in the end I stuck another 10k on the budget and got a 997 turbo - black/black manual of course, and the interior is better with some silver finishes as standard. Been smiling ever since although my driving roads are not as nice as yours!
Belting cars both

Well done my first 6T was a Black manual loved it great cars, i'm on my 3rd its quite leggy on the miles side but the condition and its history was the reason i bought it................and the 550bhp.
I thought long and hard about your car when it was for sale - great looks, mods and price but my head ruled and decided that I should keep an eye on resale as the modified cars seemed to hang around for a while. The manual gearbox is great for driver involvement but I bet the tiptronic is much faster in the real world. You mentioned breakdown cover...what company do you / will you use? I decided I need to change mine as my son has same company (first call) and they refused to take him on to where he was going or garage of choice when his z3 blew up, despite having "relay" cover...not something I'd want to have happen to the new 6tt
Well I have personal cover (where they sort you out in any car) with my daily driver, it is with Green Flag - who basically use a network of smaller break down companies. I used them once in my Westfield after it broke down - very embarrassing as I built the car and knew every nut and bolt. The guy identified the problem straight away as a loose nut on the starter motor - oh the shame!
This cover is due to run out though as I have gone multi car and the quote they gave me for breakdown cover was far too much. Just did a quick check and for personal cover with Green Flag it is £92 for my daily driver but any car I drive is covered and this covers:
Roadside assistance
Your vehicle towed to the nearest garage
No mileage or call-out charges
Cover at your home address
Take you & your vehicle home or to your preferred destination
Choice of:
Hire Vehicle for the completion of your journey
Cost of alternative transport
B&B accommodation while repairs are being carried out
Friends and relatives message service

Beautiful car. When I was looking I regularly used PistonHeads classifieds and forums to keep the dream alive. Going to get my one out today (the 996t that is) and get it fuelled up for Supercar Sunday at Goodwood tomorrow. Hope to see a few of you there.
I'm sure your smile will get larger with every day of ownership. Enjoy.

Most agree that 997 interior was a big step up, myself included.
All IMHO but 996 has:
Lack of cohesion between surfaces
Too much cheap plastics (not wholly sorted in 997)
Poor colour choice, only black looks good
Black makes it gloomy unless you spec some Ali bits
Poor seats, both std and sports are uncomfortably narrow
No sports seats with electric adj/memory
That said the OPs car looks ok as it's black with small Ali pack

Now come on, what's not to love:

Personally though I think all 911s' interiors look great - perfectly functional and that's all that matters... as long as they are black :-)

Lovely car, but 997 a huge leap forward in terms of interior design and quality. Also better looking. None of which matters when doing many many leptons!http://cdn.images.pistonheads.com/aimg/1466/146606...
