Hi,

First day of cruising in my lovely 993 '94 cab but the speakers were totally shot. I would love to replace them all plug and play. Not sure I trust Halfords. There is a lot to do on the car and I don't want to make a big job of this with rewiring, digging out the doors, etc. Any simple options for just removing blown speakers and slotting in new ones? Speaker brands that have worked for you?

Head unit is a Blaupunkt Travelpilot E (which cost £500 in 2006) so I do not plan on changing that right now, (even though I would love to plug my iphone in..but that is another story I guess!).

I'm in the same boat Chris, mine are shot as well. Rennlist is your friend here, the only probs I can see, is that a lot of the speakers they know will fit, aren't available in the UK, or at least go under another name.
Also I see Gert sells the upgraded direct replacements for the back shelf. Uber expensive for what they are though, but they are OE.

Hi Wozy,

Yes I rennlisted myself into confused oblivion yesterday, what with speaker replacements AND child car seats. If you are talking back shelf speakers then possibly you have hi-fi option? I cleary don't. The sound is horrendous, possibly due to blown speakers. I have something that passes for a woofer lower door and sticky outy tweeter upper door panel and something else possibly midrange on side panel behind front seats.

The closest I got was a post about "a 6 inch speaker from JL Audio" (on PH actually) that is a direct replacement for the 5.25"/6"/6.5" woofer (no one can categorically tell me which!), but which model and whether its still made I don't know. I did PM the guy who posted it who said he has exchanged speakers in both hi-fi and non hi-fi cars he has had. I will of course let you know if he gets back to me. Unfortunately I know NADA about this stuff.

On the plus side I have just been listening to "Flat Six" by Nine and the Elevens (sorry that was awful)

wink

For a good sound though you have to have an amplifier and a subwoofer.

And when i say sub i do not mean so that it goes boom boom boom like what you might hear at Maccy D's on southend sea front .... a sub is a must to fill out the sound and give it a sense of punch and propulsion. In a 993 without it all you will hear is about 400hz. upwards.

Chris,

I went for Rainbow Dreamliner speakers in my 964 . Fantastic quality although more expensive than the JBL's that some people go for.

Also extensive feature on 993 audio done at Autoaudio (Park Royal, superb) in this blog http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=88317&postday... For originality + performance you want a Becker. 100s of threads on this - you can't get them any more and people charge silly prices for them. Just steer away from graphic equaliser Pioneer or something.

Well done buying the car, looks great. I think what everyone means by "doing the steering rack once" means "buying a new steering rack". This might be your in-car audio budget gone!

Edited to say that http://www.vdoshop.co.uk/acatalog/12-Volt-RDS-Tune... VDO has 'original look' with USB for iPod. And cheap.

Why oh why does a company like Porsche invest all that money on a product for an old Porsche, and then so cock it up?

Every bit of feedback I hear about their retro Sat Nav is, that it's utter pants.

Yeah, that Park Royal place was recommended to me by Chelsea Carrera. As it is on the other side of town he also recommended these guys http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/ on Garret Lane, SW18. I gave them a call and I think I might just go down there for them to take a look. Apparently they will try to up-sell you to a premium system but I will do some research to find some high quality cheap gear that they carry and get them to fit it.

I'll have a decent stereo and a shot steering rack!

Forget Dynamic Audio in Wandsworth. The guy did not have a clue. It's madness to let someone who does not know what they are doing mess with your beauty!

Phoned Greg at Auto Audio and he quoted me £540 for refitting all the speakers and running a jack from my existing head unit for iPhone. Maximo Morel 6 (2-way) in the front and maximo 4 coaxial in the back. That sounds very reasonable and I know it wont be mind-blowing sound but it will be a hell of a lot better than what I have now and it will reflect the spec of my non-hifi option car.

New speakers sound bally amazing! Really no need for extra amps or worries about not enough bass. It really is tremendous sound. Auto Audio Installations did a great job. They really know their stuff... eg they recognised that my windscreen ariel had been detached (Sheete radio signal), probably during windscreen sills refurb (although they could not fix it). They also managed to get my old head unit to take an aux out jack (saved me replacing it for £400) which took them ages and was done for free! I would not go anywhere else in London.

I will post pictures of what they did. I suspect some will not approve of the small red logo or the logo slightly visible through the grills, but it is far from garish and the larger grill on the front (17cm) is unrecognisable. It is an interesting question of how much modern pleasure one should sacrifice for total originality. I can safely say I wish the last owner had done it...the old Nokia speakers were in a shocking state!

Just drove across London from the shop roof down, stereo loud, undoubtedly look a tw@t...but a very happy tw@t.

Hi Hornbaek,

Greg is the man to speak to. It doesn't take long to realise he is an expert in the fine detail of putting everything back as it should be. I paid £540 inc VAT for the whole job. I think that is pretty good. I will get those pics up so you can see what it looks like.

I have to say I am not too happy with the orientation of the back speakers. They look skew. I think this is because they were going to re-use the original grills but my ones were in very bad shape so it might not be an issue for you. I should have questioned this at the time. The more I look the more it bothers me!! I have thought of teasing off the red logos...

Opinions would be of interest to me!

BTW I have to say that this set up has bucketloads of bass, for my ear anyway. Bigger front lower woofer delivers that.

Hi Hornbaek,

I would value you opinion on the look of the speakers. I was going to tease off the red logos and Greg also offered to spray over some spare ones and send them to me. I could also find some original back grilles, as mine were not in good enough condition to reuse.
