I've been mulling over a 996 manual turbo of late as a car to enjoy rather than as an investment, but you were going to spend £20-30K (no way I could justify more!), which 911 would you invest in and why? I assume I'm too late price wise for a 993 :-(

Yes I'd stetch to 30k and try and find an X50 996turbo.

If it's investment then three good 996 C2's would be the way to go...

I have room for one car in the garage! I'm wondering if the 996 turbo might go the way of the 993 in a few years if I've left it too late to afford a 993. And I guess it's too soon for the 997 as there is more depreciation to come?

Agreed, nice 996 c2 for £10k is a bargain.

Also I'd consider 928 gt or GTS, 968 clubsport, 3.0 sc, 3.2, 964, 993 - anything with a manual

Is it too late for the 993 in that bracket? Presumably always best to try and get a manual and a turbo?

£30k should still buy an ok 964 or 993 C2 - but they're already on the up, however a 996 could be a better, but riskier, speculative buy.

Is there a general feeling that the 996 (even turbo?) isn't likely to have a longterm upside?

I don't forsee it, ever. Air cooled is were it is at. A good 993 at £30k should be a safe bet.

Sure the same was said about the SC and the 964 when they we're less appreciated and now look at them.

there are a lot of factors which go into making a car desirable longer term including number produced and whether they we're actually a great drive.

The 996 turbo won praise from release and has a big following. Some don't like the looks but others love it and they sure have presence when moving or just filling up in the petrol station. But a good one and you won't go far wrong.

It's certainly a more sensible buy that trying to buy some of the tired aircooled cars which are bing touted around at £25-30k.

Buy one, drive it and enjoy it.

996 Turbo.
They are such great value and with a few tweaks a nice pipe and remap fantastic fun.
I'm on my 3rd never lost on any.
For shear epic performance/road presence/fantastic value best 911's ive ever owned by far.

They will go up. Think of all the emissions legislation and Eurobox rubbish on the roads now. Only going to get worse.

Any colour combos that folks think are more / less popular?

993s: many are dark blue (three variations, I think), or two silvers. Arena Red if you like metallic red. Also plain black and a nice metallic black with gold particles in it. The plain colours weren't popular in the UK (white, red, yellow etc). There is a fantastic Viper/Signal Green one here in Hertfordshire. At the time, it was a bit of a Merc SL-basher so company director-type buyers played it straight.

I have a Slate Grey one which is relatively rare and - to my mind - the best colour... in the days before all cars were grey. Pic of mine with monster 991 in retro Slate.

At a quick glance that 991 looks like a Pana! The size differential is substantial.

I see the viper/signal green 993 around the St.Albans and Chiswell Green area from time to time. Lovely car!

I've just bought a 993 C4 coupe manual, in arena red (which I wasn't sure about at first, but now I love it, and it's certainly more stand out than silver or blue). I bought mine for just under 30k, literally about a month or so ago. It has 76k miles, bought from a dealer (Phil Raby in Chichester). So if you like the 993 NBs then I'd have thought that's a good way to go personally.

The 996 Turbo is a lovely car however, so wouldn't blame you if you went in that direction. I just preferred the noise and more mechanical feel of the earlier car. Ultimate performance for me isn't really that important, you can't use it in on the road anyway. In the 993, you get a greater sense of speed, more noise, and a more senses-stimulating ride; so you enjoy the drive more even at sensible speeds. Plus I have a superbike for ultimate speed thrills on track :-)

Best of luck.
