That's awful; it makes me feel quite unwell.
I'm doing the big wash/polish/wax to mine on Wednesday, pre Le Mans. If it comes up as good as that, I'll be happy!

Car looks filthy right now, had a fantastic drive down to Wilton sandwiched between a 12C and an Aventador, the 996T really held its own, not bad for a 13 year old car! I don't see me letting it go for a very long time smile

Gave my turbo a clean yesterday ahead of wilton house. Shame she is so 'ugly' and 'dated'. Several people commented on how hideous it was at the petrol station biglaugh

Such a nice colour, I'd almost prefer Seal Grey over Black smile

Not surprised - that was not a crazy price for a low mileage, late model car with aerokit. No X50 pack though...

There certainly don't seem to be as many 'cheap' ones for sale as there were when I bought mine, perhaps the firming up of prices has persuaded owners to hang onto them?

Okay so firstly to get the nice stuff out the way, 996 turbos are very nice and prices definitely seem to be going north... BUT what I really don't get is people buying these because they think the 997 will cost them more.

Got to love a turbo but also got to pay to maintain it, I would say as a rough rule probably twice as much as a 997, Sure if the 997 engine lunches it will be expensive but with a turbo it is going to be more expensive.expensive as a matter of fact .. Brakes, tyres, turbo?, and so on.

So Turbos great, prices going up great, people buying them as they are a cheaper option than a 997.... idiots..

You said yourself, if the engine lunches it....

Excluding the GT cars the Turbo is the flagship 911, it offers supercar performance and with this comes expensive consumables especially as they get older. Roll on 13 years and the engines have earned a reputation for being incredibly hardy, and generally the cars are reliable with few weak points. Yes one of the turbo's might fail and set you back a few k but its a 13 year old supercar capable of just shy 200mph. Find me an alternative which is as cheap to run! Ferrari? Lambo?

So where does a 997.1 fit in? its newer, arguably more attractive inside and out, and its an entry level model with probably 70% of the performance but in a newer thus (in theory) more reliable car which should have cheaper consumables (due to being entry level). Stick a 997.2 in the ring with a 996 Turbo and i'd agree your point is 100% valid. The problem is you are buying a car with known engine flaws, IMS, RMS, Bore scoring etc... So there is a good chance you will end up paying MORE than the Turbo.

The choice for me is easy, own an iconic 911 Turbo with breathtaking performance, expect bills (and maybe the odd unexpected one) which are cheap for its level of performance, and when a big one comes along, say to yourself 'what do you expect, its a 911 turbo'.

or take a 997 and possibly kick yourself when you pay out insane money due to design flaws, in the knowledge you could have paid less to run a turbo. Infact just the nagging doubt the engine is known to be unreliable would ruin ownership for me

I'd love to see how you think on average a 997 will cost half the price to run! Brakes? Tyres? I'd suggest you do some research, very much doubt either are cheaper on the 997 - happy to be proved wrong

Agree re. maintenance, they will all cost, that's just the territory. Personally bought mine as I have had 5 996's, just my thing and made an impression on me as a young chap! But agree, both will cost to maintain, no such thing as a cheap one if maintained properly.
