Wanna make £££ Get yourself a 996 Turbo
Discussion
The 996 turbo is only dull if you poodle around like most drivers do (but does make a pleasant town drive). The variable cam makes the car so tame and compliant when you drive like a pussy. BUT!, when these cars are driven hard they are amazing. A true supper car! Then take the game on and tune them and they become a car you just want to drive every day and all day long. Does not matter how many 996 turbos are up for sale, does not matter how many people slag off the head lights, does not matter how many people say it boring because they drive like OAP's, The truth is they are fkg brilliant. Better than the 993 turbo due to peddle placement and performance, and better build quality (if you want to argue about build quality I suggest you do your research before you start slagging the 996 turbo), better steering feel than the 997 turbo.
A true future classic.

I was just pointing out that in my ownership I never once thought:
"I wish my gearbox was stronger"
or
"I wish I had better IC's"
or
"I wish my clutch was stronger"
Well I disagree 100%. The X50 pack with the above improvements have enabled me to upgrade to 673hp. That's 673 at the wheels and the car is amazing. Again I would say it all depends on how you drive these cars. I was just pointing out that in my ownership I never once thought:

I quite like the idea of one, but so many people now have said that they're not exciting enough to drive. Added to that, someone I knew (who can really pedal) owned one for less than a year and then bought a GT3, which speaks volumes to me. I've not driven one, but I'm assuming that they're massively grippy, are a bit laggy and ultimately hard to drive with the tail out much. But then that's to miss the car's USP, which is IMO to get a tall German from Stuttgart to St Moritz in record time. A true future classic.

I've never really felt mine was laggy, but maybe that's the difference with it being non-X50. I think GT3s are more focussed, but that also has it's downside for regular use. They are indeed massively grippy - the one area mine has always impressed me is in the wet. Still loads of useable power, and lots of grip.

I've never driven a car with a turbo that felt as instantly responsive as a NA car and I think that would ruin the experience for me. When I plant my foot on the floor in a turbocharged car, it feels like the car gets a little acceleration initially, certainly enough to transfer weight to the rear (improving traction) and then the boost comes in fractionally later. In a normally aspirated 991 S, as soon as the throttle hits the stop, there is seemingly instant power on tap, enough to shock the wheels to spin. I love that immediacy, which I think turbos miss. I do wonder if that's what the people who find this car a bit unexciting dislike about it. Obviously, if you're driving smoothly then it would never be an issue, but if you're really trying, it would dull the experience somewhat. All IMO of course, and I completely appreciate that some drivers like the feeling of boost coming in. They are indeed massively grippy - the one area mine has always impressed me is in the wet. Still loads of useable power, and lots of grip.
I bought my 996t [ tubi, miltek, wavetrack rear diff, KW3, GT3 front brakes, Fearnsport re-map etc ] late last year.
I had finally decided to retire from Rallying again and the 996t was bought as it ticked all the boxes of what I wanted a car for :
Fun on the road
Popular with the wife!
Fast
And most importantly for me to be able to rock up to some hillclimbs, stick the numbers on and compete.
I did my first hillclimb a couple of weeks ago at Prescott, we left Friday afternoon and had a very pleasant journey up from Winchester to Cheltenham area, all very comfy and relaxing.
Saturday practise at Prescott, roll up, put the timing strut on, magnetic numbers and go practise.
I ended up being fastest in class after an 18 year break there and first time out in the 996t, all up against very well sorted and modified Evo’s, Scoobys, another 997t plus various other fast cars.
The 997T owner also has a 996 GT3 was raving like me about the turbos performance, albeit he found it very different , especially the lack of instant throttle response and the weight of the car, but that is cancelled out by the huge torque and immense grip.
Sunday timed runs, I was 2nd after the first run, last run was going to be much better and probably a class win, but having mastered the pumping the throttle to get on boost earlier, it shot out of a tight hairpin with the back wheels spinning up then decided to throw all 40% to the front which caught me out and pulled me up the grass bank a little resulting in the inevitable lift,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,no harm done, but a 3rd in class.
So, 996t 1 me 0 this time!
End of meeting remove numbers, strut etc and just poodle back home.
The biggest compliment I can give my 996t is that I personally doubt for the money there is another car that could do all this so well

"tubi, miltek"
Sheesh, that must be very noisy ? or very quiet ? 2 exhausts
Miltek manifolds, tubi system Sheesh, that must be very noisy ? or very quiet ? 2 exhausts
Here it is on Sundays damp practise, took it a bit easy here as traction was a bit difficult to find! its the first car up in this YT clip, its not noisy on the road.

Well I've owned 12 911's.
GT2/GT3/930/964 Turbo etc
I'm on my 3rd 996 Turbo by far the best 911's I've owned bar none.
They do everything well from pottering around to pushing along nicely on a back lane.
Mine is running circa 550BHPish has 94k miles under its belt (not that you'd know-its mint) and on a steady run I get 30MPG. Classic car insurance costs me around £350pa and the values are going North.
They are truly stunning Porsches, certainly not boring. Mine has a Miltek pipe on it and DMS did all the mods. Boring??

With the crazy prices being paid for 996 GT3's and especially 996 RS's , time to reflect on the undervalued 996 Turbo.
- Super car for Salon Money
- Stunning performance.
These cars are the next big movers in the Porsche market IMO ! Grab one if you can, drive it , enjoy it and pack a profit. This is gonna be my next purchase by years end to add to my 996 GT3
Sold my 996 turbo 17 months ago for £25K ( the same price i paid for it three years previously) & same car would now cost me at least £30K. Infact two guys who work for an indie I use have both bought 996 turbos for themselves. I do regret selling mine. A bigger regret was selling my 993 - Super car for Salon Money
- Stunning performance.

I must admit, it's nice that they've gone up but this thread is making me wonder if I'm selling an appreciating asset. Timing is right for mine to go, but I'll kick myself if they continue to rise significantly! (Which knowing my car selling history, they will)
Right decision, too many people stick with their cars for fear of missing out on an increase.Cars are for driving enjoyment and lots of makes/models to experience!

Here you go.
Couple of yrs and they'll be manic if they follow the trend of other older turbo's which they will.
