Just over 2 years ago, I bought a 4 year old C2S (Gen 1, 3.8) from a Porsche Centre. Mileage was 25k, now 47k. The warranty expires in a week, on its 6th birthday.

Offer is renew at 12mth £1,405; 24mth £2,581. Includes 111 point check and Porsche assist.

It's my only car. What would you do?

TIA.

I'm not a great believer in warranty's and don't have one on my car but on a gen 1 997 if I were planning on keeping it for the duration of the warranty period then I think I would bite the bullet for the peace of mind on the engine alone.

Renew!

Or keep a big slush fund just in case!

Hope it's been great so far with more to come, but they can get expensive if they go wrong and I'd prefer the warranty... smile

I always planned to go down the indy maintenance plan route myself, but having discussed with the garage, the entry costs are unreasonable in my view....£3500 to do things that are not necessary at this stage

Therefore, with my 8yr old C2S, I'm going down the slush fund route I think.

Had my 987 Boxster for 2 years, and my 997 Turbo for 1 year....no warranties so at those warranty prices '12mth £1,405; 24mth £2,581' = £3,986 in the bank.....and my outlay has been a new front coolant pipe on the turbo £190...thats still £3,796 in the bank, add to this the cost of a service each at Porschtek instead of OPC a saving of around £900 so thats £4,696 in the bank....it soon adds up and and i can fit what battery, tyres etc i wan't.

Forgot to mention if i was going the warranty route i would now be renewing at say 2 x £1,405 = £2,810 added to £4,696 gives me a fund of £7,506 for the next year.

how much have you claimed in the last 2/25k miles years and that's your answer.

Its not really the answer though is it?

It's like saying "How much money have you wasted on life or critical illness insurance over the years?" It's never a 'waste', its the mitigation of a risk, it depends entirely on how risk averse you are.

OP, If it was me, I would renew for two years.

Must say this depends on each individuals circumstances, personally i work away for 6 months a year..and have a 4x4 for winter duties..so do 3k miles max in each....if i had a 60k mile car and was going to do 20k miles a year over the next 2 years..i would have the warranty no problem.

Do it I was in two minds of about renewing as nothing had gone wrong in the car for the first year i had it, when it went in for the 111 point check a couple of weeks before the renewal OPC found some issues turbo leak, door membrane, alternator etc all replaced without any quibbles.

Having said that I ran my lotus for 5 years without any warranty and it needed nothing apart from consumables and regular servicing, but then there wasn't much to go wrong in an Elise; modern 911's have a lot of things that can go wrong

First owner of my Boxster renewed the warranty at 2 years old with a total of 5316 miles on the clock, at a cost of 1132 pounds....warranty company must have been laughing all the way to the bank.

OK, thanks for replies.

In the past two years, the car has had a CV joint, leaking steering rack, and front & rear trailing arms repaired/replaced. The problem is I don't know how much this work would have cost if I had been paying for it. The other problem is that I don't know what's round the next corner.

I'm not too worried about the engine - I believe it was earlier cars which were prone to the bore-scoring problem (please correct me if I'm wrong!). Mines a July 2008 model.

I intend to keep the car for the foreseeable future (at least two years), and do about 10,000 miles per year. It's the best car I have ever had.

I think I'm probably going to "chicken out" and renew the warranty for two years. Wimp that I am.

All gen 1 997 are prone to bore scoring.

Well its nearly warranty renewal time if i had them.... for my 997 Turbo and 987 Boxster S so say another £2,810 of OPC warranty...thats £10,316 in the pot.

Excellent , another 15k in the pot and you'll maybe be able to replace the turbo engine if it blows !

Partially jesting as I have run my cayman since the official warranty ended but not sure
I could live with the potential huge bill of a turbo engine going pop.

If you're going the warranty route 2 years looks like a no brainer at £1,176 for the 2nd year.

I'd probably take it on a 997.1 C2S.
