997 Turbo Exhaust
Discussion
Hi Guys
I'd like to introduce myself
I'm Chris I own a Black low mileage low owner full Dealer Service History Gen 1 997TTwhich I must say brings a smile to my face every time I drive her. This is my first venture into the Porsche world I took over a year to find the right car!
The only downside I feel is the exhaust and it's note. Thus now I have started to research for a replacement (I'm not one to rush into anything). Any information / experience would be gladly appreciated (possible remap and different coolers could be an option as I would not like to run the risk of damaging her)

Hi Nick
Thanks for the response
I'm interested to know what you had done in stages what sort of gains and associated costs and also who carried out the work and if the parts were sourced in the UK. I live in central Scotland I Typed FVD exhaust into You tube and it sounds very meaty
Sorry for all the questions I'm just starting out my Turbo journey

First I fitted a TUBI that I purchased on Ebay cheap. It was marginally better than stock IMO but nothing special and didn't fit 100%. Thanks for the response

Then I purchased FVD software and that really woke the car up. After doing a bit of research I learnt that the FVD exhausts were built by M-M racing who make a lot of systems for Porsche Motorsport teams and Manthey racing. So I purchased a sound version exhaust with 200cell cats and titanium tips. I also uprated the clutch not long after with the FVD clutch kit inc lightweight flywheel. This is stage 2 which is around 550hp/550lbs trq.
I drove the car like this for nearly 3.5 years problem free. I also decided to uprate the suspension setup as it was a bit sloppy for me in standard form so I changed everything and I mean everything
The intercooler options at the time were quite terrible so I decided to get my own set made up using Marston Aerospace cores which is the best you can get(as the GT2RS intercoolers were not out and for the money is quite a good choice) and the data logs showed a huge difference in intake temps.
By this time I felt I was ready for a bit more power so I ordered stage 3 the exchange hybrid turbos and manifolds which took the car upto a healthy 600hp/600lbs trq.
Unfortunately last summer I noticed coolant underneath my engine so I took the car to Porsche before I went on holiday and had the engine checked. I had the dreaded coolant connection issue where the factory bond started to let go and one of the plastic coolant pipes also started to split. luckily I caught this early. So while I was away I decided to drop the engine to FVD in Germany and have the engine rebuilt to 3.8ltr and crank the power up some more and also have all the coolant connection welded instead of bonded so the problem never happens again. It's running 640hp/700lbs trq at present. Very easy to drive and very fast.
Here are the prices upto stage 3.

For what it's worth, i don't think there is a system out there than does anything other make the car sound louder. None of them give an exotic note and not even close to the naturally aspirated 911 models.
Strange really, i've heard GTRs - another 6cyl turbocharged car - and the systems available for them have real character.

You need to come and hear mine then. I would agree with you but this system gives it more of a GT3 pitch/note. I have plenty of comments coming out of peoples mouths who have told me many times it sounds great for a turbo.Strange really, i've heard GTRs - another 6cyl turbocharged car - and the systems available for them have real character.
Thanks Nick
The information you have provided is very helpful. I've been looking closely at FVD and they look like a strong option.
I think I would go for stage 2
I have a couple of questions for you,
Did you travel to Germany to have the work carried out?
Was there any fault codes incurred as a result of the changes?
The software how was this done a local tuner or Germany?
Was there a big difference in the feel of the car and does this remove to sport function?
I'm slightly worried with the coolant problem you incurred was this a result of the upgrades?
Chris

I had my engine rebuilt in Germany but everything else was done here in the U.K. by myself. The information you have provided is very helpful. I've been looking closely at FVD and they look like a strong option.

There were no fault codes.
There was a substantial difference in the car after doing stage 2 and in sport you get even more power.
The coolant issue was an issue with Porsches bonding process and it will happen to majority of turbos eventually so nothing to do with the mods.
Send me an email if you need some help.
Have a look at Kline Innovation They make a very nice exhaust I had fitted earlier this year. Sounds great especially when opening up past 3 grand. Price is about £2100. There is a thread on 911uk.com and quite a few turbo owners have fitted them recently and are happy with the sound. Very well built as well.

Europipe for gen 1 turbo on ebay, looks fairly priced (no affiliation).
Great choice for someone looking for a slightly more aggressive tone than stock. No weight saving but extremely well built. I had their stage 2 loud on my 996tt and was ok just very pricey.s3nick said:

I'm having a Capristo exhaust fitted to my 997 turbo this week.
Interesting to hear what this sounds like.
A mate of mine has one fitted to his turbo. Very nice exhaust a little on the pricey side but still very nice. Interesting to hear what this sounds like.
