yes they are still too long but the GT3 is 85mph in 2nd the 981 82 mph the R is 76mph
One advantage on the road with these very long ratios is that there should be less chance of accidental over revs driving below the legal limit wink

Thanks...
Fell in love with the car the minute I saw it. Had not thought about a White one..

Flew up Thursday, long drive back to Surrey..

It feels like a mini (996) GT3 (bold statment I know).

I'll post some pics up when I get a minute.

Thanks to everyone saying how good the CR's are..

JZM guys really helpful - can understand all the good comments on here. But not so convenient for me.

Andrew at George Mackay brilliant. Would highly recommend them, did a great job selling car for good price quickly. And if the new owner is on here you have got a great well loved car!

Did have second thoughts when handing over the keys. But then the racing yellow GT3 arrived.... :-)
Did you buy the racing yellow?

Er, the R has a maximum rotational speed of 7,500rpm

The mk2 996 GT3 (I believe that is the 2nd gear speed you quote above for) has a maximum rotational speed of 8,200rpm

If the R revved to 8,200rpm it would b travelling at 83mph

Hardly a gulf of a difference.

A option to switch the rear axle ratio would be handy.

it's about owning both cars and finding that for me and the roads I use that extra speed was hard to get too, the GT3 engine sweet spot is much higer up the rev range, it's not about 2nd gear, it's more about reving out in 3rd on B roads was not really possible.
the GT3 is 116 mph, my R 104 mph, but where you don't need to rev the R out to the max , in the GT3 you wanted to rev it out.

I see Jack has also decided to NOT use his GT3 as a every day car now and has a shorter ratio GTS to use ;-)

SO as you can see it's nothing to do with magazines, it's all about my OWN experiences and what I like and how I found the GT3 frustrating, please accept it :-)

I make a point in knowing all the facts before I post and keep road and track data sheets of all these cars, ratio's and speed in gear is not the same, at the end of the day the 981 does 82 mph in 2nd gear which is more than the 987.2 cars do, that's a FACT, I don't have time atm to post 3rd gear speeds as I need to earn some dosh :-)
the other fact is a 997.1(x50) c2S is faster to UK legal speeds than a 997.1 GT3 RS

The 991 GT3 only does 102 in 3rd which is a hugh reason it posts such fast times to the ton.

ALl these cars have way to long ratio's and while the 987.2 is still too long the speeds are the smallest of the 3 cars, (GT3 and 981)

even PDK is too long in 2nd gear, but is about spot on in 3rd. (74mph from memory for a 981 PDK in 2nd)

all I state is the 981 does more mph in gear and when the 987.2 already does 76 to go to 82 is even worse.
THe GT3 being even worse again !!!

that is a FACT ;-)

The magazines are only just stating now what I have been taking about for 2 + years, every review now says 981 to long a gear ratio !!!
ABout time they took note to my posts 2 years ago ;-) shame they don't talk about GT3 in gear speeds yet !!!

...Or just get out of your armchair and go find some great driving roads smile

My 987.1 RS60 Spyder as tested at c.7000 rpm (may differ from paper):

1st: 30
2nd: 72
3rd: 99

Do I ever drive like this? No, never LOL. I just find some great B roads and drop to the right gear for the right road / bend with the right level of torque for that moment in time.

I find the gearing perfect.

This ^ And even if I do think about them, it doesn't make blind bit of difference, you work with what you've got. Whining about gear/final drive ratios is akin to going out with a short fat, blonde chick but thinking "I wish she were a tall, thin brunette".

nuts

each to their own but that's how I feel about them and any who does not agree is entitled to have their own opinion :-)

All well and good saying find a nice B road but when a nice B Road ave speed is 85mph which most are in the UK if you are on it, then it puts you in no mans land in 3rd gear in a Gt3 and hence why it was sold, the 981 I think I would also find frustrating 118mph in 3rd gear in a 981, where my Spyder an R is 104mph

so when you state 104 is equal to 118 mph that is deluded :-)

I never bought the R for it's ratios, I bought the R as I was pissed off with the GT3 and then the M3, SO I bought the hard top v of my Spyder as it's about the only car I liked driving.

these are pain facts, yuo are stating black is white atm !!!

Funny how opinions differ. If the average speed on a nice A/B road was around 85 mph I would find the GT3's third gear perfect - peak torque in 3rd is somewhere around 55mph and top speed is 120, so 85 mph is right in the middle of a nice big zone from 5000rpm to 8400rpm. driving
