What version of the 997 is the best model to go for on a £45k budget? 2S or 4s? Other than 4wd are there any other major differences? Any major reliability issues to look out for? What are the main differences between Gen 1 and Gen 2 cars?

@ £45k you're looking at gen2 anyway, dismiss the gen1 unless you want to spend a lot less.
4s has wide body and smaller front boot. That's it. Except for a IMO very different driving experience. Try both, I prefer the S and I have a gen2 S.

Gen2 have no major reliability issues and at that money you can get one from OPC with 2yrs of Porsche warranty for worry free motoring.

You can't really go wrong with the Gen2 C4S. It's a bit less sharp at the front end, but wins for looks with the wide body and the red stripe across the back. They tend to have a few more options fitted than the C2S I found.

The Gen2 AWD is not too intrusive and you only get to hear the front kicking in on rare occasions. You get the locking rear diff on the C4S.

MPG is a bit better on the C2S if that matters. :-)

C2S 997.2 PDK with PSE, Sports chrono adaptive sports seats.

What are the running costs like on a Turbo compared to a 2S?

Bizarrely, from my experience, the Turbo is cheaper to insure, and does about 20% better fuel economy than the S/GTS models.

Servicing I don't think is wildly different, intervals are the same etc.

911 coupe with manual gearbox:

Either 997.1 turbo if you like turbo cars - robust, performance and it's a turbo.

Or a 997.2 C2S if you like N/a cars - manual, 2wd, 911 coupes always hold their appeal.

+4 I'd pick the turbo! biggrin

Gen 2 C2S.

You don't need 4WD so why carry around that extra weight all year?

Turbo if you want a car that sounds like a turd and is pointlessly fast for our roads...tongue out

Had a Gen 1 Turbo and have a Gen 2 C4S. For me, the latter is a much nicer car to drive. For some, saying they have a Turbo is a big plus, but unless you plan on turning it into a weapon, you have to live with a dull engine note.

I also think the C4S is a better looking car than the Turbo; the same body but without the fussy addenda.

As i'm not a long standing 'Porsche person', i liked the 4WD for the initial front end bite. It is a very nicely balanced car and it is no surprise it is faster than the 2S on track in the wet AND dry.

It depends on personal taste. I agree with all those who said Gen.1 Turbo after all that's what I have. However the chap above makes some good points about the noise being a big part of the experience when you drive. Also for all but the most speed crazy, the NA 911 would be enough grunt. I'd say drive them all, and take it from there. If you can though, drive the Turbo last, because otherwise you will think there is something wrong with the NA cars afterwards!

+5 The best 997 for £45k IMO is the Turbo, Gen1 only on your budget, and as already said by another poster, "That's what I did"

HOWEVER.......don't underestimate how big a step change the Gen2 cars are, better in every way, in some areas dramatically so, you must not buy until you've driven both.

I STRONGLY suspect the "nicer to drive" is down to Gen2 improvements, or did you drive a Gen2 Turbo?

4S, best looking 997 bar none??

Could well be..
