I do occasionally use 2nd gear - the car has so much torque that it still pulls away cleanly and you avoid a 1st to 2nd shift. So whilst the initial roll from rest is a bit slow, you can get up to a good speed (e.g. joining a roundabout) very quickly in second.

It's horses for courses - both work well (but 1st only for hill starts I've found).

Cheers
Cheers, i ended up using 2nd from rest when on level ground quite often so just wanted to be sure the car would be fine doing that and not overly wearing on the clutch.

Hi

Very nice. Looks superb in red.

Do you know how it got an 07 plate when it is a 2005 car?

Thanks guys for the clutch advice, I have stalled it a few times and was worried I was doing something wrong.

Collected this last week, 3-400 miles in and it is awesome. Clutch frightens me to death but I'm getting used to it .
Taking it to Reading next week to get a once over.

Anyone else nervous of the clutch ?
Is it advisable to have no acceleration at all when letting the clutch out?
Anything else to look out for?

The red one on the previous post looks incredible!!
Many congratulations.

As others have said above, the clutch is relatively easy to use once you trust the anti-stall software. So, from rest just ease out the clutch with no throttle, and you will feel the clutch bite, and then the anti-stall software sustain the engine revs. Once you've started rolling, you can ease in the throttle.

You can do this on hill starts as well - either using the handbrake, or (as I do) using your right foot on the brake pedal, and just easing off the brake once the clutch is biting. Takes a bit of nerve to trust the system but it does work. I do still stall very occasionally, but it's no big deal.

If you use the throttle before the clutch engages, the anti-stall software switches off and you are on your own - and generally the car will stall unless you feed in a lot of revs, which is not good at all for clutch longevity. So I just roll away from the line without any gas. It works in second gear as well (on the flat).

Other things? Well, the car is incredibly well engineered so it should be fine, but the chaps at Reading are second to none and will find any issues.

The only other advice is to change the tyres to the N-rated Michelin Super Sports - they really do transform the handling compared to the original fit PS2s.

Enjoy (and take care in cold weather - the traction control is incredibly basic and tends to only come in after you've had a moment!).

Cheers
Thanks stefan

I didn't know about using the throttle disengages the Anti Stall, I'm sure it'll give me more confidence, especially when I've got a line of cars behind me. I feel like a learner !!

Whilst we have so many owners on this thread, have any of you managed to upgrade the sat nav disc to something more recent? Anyone asked Reading about this?

I have Becker Online Pro Version 2.1 discs (Navigation CD Europe 1 & 2).

I love the car being totally original and using the original equipment, but the maps are from 2003..

All CGTs are stunning, but some are slightly more stunning than others-and that red one-bloody gorgeous!

Interesting re the anti stall in these, there is a video on jay lenos garage in which he explains it all-& the infamous high speed spin he had!

I think most modern cars have this now however-certainly one of my girls at work who is learning to drive has been instructed to not bother with the accelerator and just feed in the clutch-the ecu does the rest!

I just saw a thread on Rennlist about linking an ipad to a CGT system to get music and navigation - didn't read it as I don't have a CGT, but it might be helpful for you

yes, I saw that. It prompted me to try and source some updated maps, much prefer the car being totally original. cheers

Looks nice in red.
From memory not all the cars had anti-stall and i think needed to be upgraded on the software, this could be checked out with reading if required.
I know what you mean about being like a learner driver again with the clutch, but once you get used to it,its easy.
Enjoy

I think I have newer maps than this on my Indianapolis pro, we could try those to see if they work.

It's not really sat nav though by todays standards, more of an arrow pointing the way to head :-)

I never really use the nav when I am in it and have co pilot on my iphone which I use if I need to. Don't really see the point in doing it and as others have said it's not sat nav by todays standards.

Nice car OP, sorry haven't read all the thread and apologies if it's been covered, but how do you find using LHD in UK?

Thinking of going LHD for my next car.

I had a LHD car in London for about 2-3 years and never found it to be a problem. On country roads you need to make your overtaking decision early and in parking garages you have to get out / lean across, but all in all no big negatives imo

Re LHD, it really is no problem at all in the uk in my experience, so don't fear it, especially if it gets you into some interesting metal for less or that was LHD only. Was out in the CGT at the weekend with a friend in his F40 and we were trying to press on mainly on A and B roads. It does make overtaking a little more challenging at times but it is still doable, you just need to take a bit more care which is no bad thing.

Congrats to AndrewD and Myles on your recent purchases- looks stunning in red! All the advice on clutch use is spot on - I spent the weekend trying to rewrite my brain re coming off the clutch with no revs. Makes for leisurely get aways but will have to try the 2nd gear technique. Given the way it looks, drives and sounds, I can forgive it a non conventional 1st gear!
