I have not driven either one, but just going on looks and what I have read about these cars over the years, I am not sure a Turbo will make you happy as a second car in the UK(I can understand going for a Turbo if you live in Germany, as the speeds you can do on the Autobahn are quite addictive - it would still be my only car though not a weekend car). I think as a second car I'd rather go for an early 996 and pocket some money, I think they have aged very well and if you have to have an engine rebuild (that is if you cant find one that was rebuilt already), it will be a much cheaper engine rebuild than the Turbo will eventually need. My perfect weekend car would probably be a 964 C2 Manual and I know that is not an option for you. So my vote goes to a Hartech rebuilt 996 C2 - one of the early cars as I think they are prettier ....
not much help I know, but felt like contributing anyway
Eh, there's no point in owning a 996 turbo in the UK? Why not? OP lives in Cornwall where there's virtually no traffic for 46 weeks of the year so I'd suggest he's in one of the best counties for such a car. Mind you, all the folk I know in Lancashire with Porsche turbos seem to do ok with them as well...
in my opinion there are better options as a weekend car as speed is not of as much importance in the UK - had a z3 m coupe and an f355 in the Uk and i got most enjoyment out of the sounds and feel of the cars, the acceleration periods were so short that they were not that great - both cars much slower than a turbo and i just kept getting frustrated because i could only accelerate for short periods of time (or drove at speeds which would have put my license injeopardy if stopped). much more fun in germany though where you can spend hours sitting between 100 and 160 mph fully accelerating for longer periods of time.

...but anyone can blast up and down a German autobahn, gawd knows I've done it enough! But to suggest that you can't use or enjoy a 996tt in the uk is nonsense. It's not all about straight line speed and acceleration. These cars go around corners as well. I'm confident the op could have fun in a 996tt without too much bother.

I went from a 3.2 Carrera to a manual 996 turbo X50.

The 996 turbo is easier to drive, far quicker and much more practical and has much more of a presence when you want to push on.

Running my 996 turbo has been cheaper than running my 3.2 Carrera - the biggest bonus is you don't have the rust and age related issues that come with a much older aircooled 911, servicng is also more affordable.

I'd like another 3.2 Carrera, I loved the older smell and agricultural feel, but not at today's prices.

The 964 prices appear to have peaked, 996 turbo now appear to be strengthening so probably as good a time as any to make the jump and try something new.

I'd suggest getting a manual 996 turbo coupe.

What makes you say 964 prices have peaked, there are just 5 C2 Manual Coupes on PH at the moment, a singer recreation for £70k, two at RPM for £35k and £4k0, Hendon way POA and one e porsh at £37995.

Not many too choose from at the moment

The price of 964 (and 3.2 Carrera) have risen sharply this year. Manual 964 C2 coupe (which you own) have been leading the pack. A nice yellow 77k mile car sold in Feb for circa £30k-32k (which now looks a bargain) and suddenly all the cars are priced at £28k-40k (even high milers).

We've certainly seen a cooling off as the housing market slowed down, summer has finished and people get distracted by the Christmas period.

Good cars aren't going to lose money and will still sell quickly, but overpriced, higher mileage cars are sticking.

I'd also quibble whether the 996tt would be cheaper to run than a 964? I know that you don't have age-related issues or rust yet with a 996 but my brother-in-law owned one for 2 years and it was by no means cheap to run and his was in very good condition - radiators, air-con condensors, heat shield corrosion issues - after all it is a supercar, with supercar type running costs.

I take your point, I'm amazed at how they have taken off this year, I think i stand a chance of breaking even if i were to sell, but i'm trying to avoid the temptation to go down to one car ! What i would say though is these cars can consume large amounts of cash, if you want to get them spot on.

Spot on. All the talk of price rises on Porsche are fine, but if you ask most owners to be honest and show you they maintenance bills over a few years it soon offsets most gains. Nice if you can get depreciation proof motoring or have a little extra but if you drive your car it's going to cost you.

The people who are going well out of the price rises are dealers and garages restoring them!

Get out and drive and enjoy your Porsche for what it is. If you enjoy your 964 C2 hold on to it as finding a replacement can take time and money! smile

one thing for sure, sell anything air cooled today and be prepared to pay £+++ to replace it, i think the wise move might be sell an aircooled and buy a 996 Turbo or even a (gt3 with cash added) which i think is where this thread started !

Been thinking about this for 2 weeks now, and I'm pretty sure that I'll be keeping the 964. If I trade it, I'm sure to regret it!
