Two 997 turbo coupes came up this week (both 40k ish miles) at £35k and £38k. At this rate 996 and 997 prices are going to merge!! How can 996 not be dropping? Why would anyone buy a 6 over a 7 if they are only a few k apart?

I tend to use the sport button when on a duel carriageway or motorway for effortless overtakes as the extra torque in sixth gear is nice. Still switch the PASM back to normal though.

Not only are PCCB discs expensive, the pads are too!

I went for the 996 Turbo S, Maual, Coupe, black, black, aero kit and sports seats. Sub 30k on the clock, immaculate......I could have purchased a 997TT but I love the way the 996 looks.

996 turbo prices will or have started to merge with 997 turbo. Although at present high milage 997TT are compareable to mid-milage 996TT.

996 Turbo S prices are very firm at the moment, probably due to limited numbers.

Just my 2p's worth.

If i were to wind back the clock, i'd test drive a 996 Turbo against a 997 Turbo before making a decision.

I had a Gen 1 997 Turbo followed by a Gen 2. The latter was so much better that i decided that, as a result, the Gen 1 997 Turbo is a pretty average car and i wouldn't of bought it if i were back in that position knowing what i do now. Does that make sense?!

As a result, i would suggest drive the 996 Turbo because if it is virtually the same in performance and handling then you may as well get one of those, assuming they can be had cheaper. My only issue would be the horrific interior.

My actual choice at this sort of price point is an M3 CSL though. It's easy to get Porsche blinkers; there are plenty of decent cars to be had at this money.

I agree test drive the cars and see which you prefer. I prefered the 996tt to the 997tt gen 1. Gen 2 was out of my budget so can not comment.

It is fair to say 996tt and 997tt gen 1 is similar but the steering and rear drive feel of the 996tt was the moment of truth for me.

Both cracking cars and by no means average.

Are you comparing like for like? I.E. are the 997's private sales and the 996's dealer cars?

It does make me chuckle when people say oh look model A is worth more than model B when model B is high miler or private sale and model A isn't.

On that score 997's must only be worth £28,000 as in the last twelve months one sold for that, that had done 120k miles. Forget it if you think I would part with my car for that biggrin

A lot of the 6s have higher mileage (even the highly priced ones). Both 7's were 40-50k miles (had SC). There are always going to be higher mileage cheap cars; that's not what I'm looking for.

For me, and it's personal, I considerably prefer the look of the 7, which is a big part of why I want one over a 6. Both are fast cars and speed difference is irrelevant to me.

Strangest conversation ever. About two weeks ago I spoke to a trader about a black/black manual 997 turbo. 44k mile car which had a dms 600 hp conversion. I asked him about condition and he said it was great. I said I was quite fussy condition wise and did it have any marks, he said no. I ask about DME rev range data and he says that it was average but couldn't give details. He said he knew the guy at dms well. I asked if he could have a little chat with him and get the data as it would be very helpful to me. I phone back the next day and he tells me it's sold. A couple of weeks pass and it's still for sale so I think sale may have fallen through (may have had a time waster etc) and I phone back. He says it's still for sale but it's not the car for me. Curious, I ask why? He says because I'm fussy and it's scruffy. This is rather strange as that isn't what he previously told me.

So people, all I would say is if your looking at a black manual 600hp dms mapped car I would strongly recommend a PPI to be safe!!

Seller clearly knew he wouldn't be able to sell his less than perfect car to you smile

standard dealer BS

1. never admit to any faults, or describe car that has not been seen by him yet
2. don't admit your BS so say car is sold
3. realise it would waste their time to debate with you, so finally admit car has faults

All was fine until I mentioned DME scans and inspections. I suspect mechanical issues.
