I've just come out of a 458 Spider which was awesome but not something to use every day & have decided to come back to Porsche.

I had a 997 Turbo Cab which was also awesome but seeing the spec & performance of the new GTS, I must admit the Carrera 4 GTS Cab is a very attractive option for me VS the new Turbo Cab because with a like for like spec, there is a difference of almost £19,000, for a performance difference of just 0.7 of a sec.

I'd appreciate any opinions from PHers who've driven or considered buying either of these 2 models. I'm currently leaning to the GTS. I normally go for the more expensive model but this time I'm not sure I can justify it..........

Thanks

Don't judge on the sprint times. It depends where you spend your miles, the devil is in the detail.

710nm of torque at 2,100 rpm vs 440nm at 5,750.

If in the mood for a cab I would wait to see what the 981 Spyder brings to the table.

Thanks Carl. Spider sounds exciting but I need the 2+2 layout to get my 1 & 3 year olds in the back, so it's got to be a 991 a Cab.

I hear you. I have a not-so-little-anymore 6 year old. Just make sure you clear the safety aspect of the 911 cab with the missus first, especially if you do motorway miles as safety a bit compromised in a 911 cab at speed. Not saying its an out and out death trap but best to raise it.

I would consider the 4 Coupe as you can always put the roofbox on the top for family trips. Glass roof option is a good half-way house.

I haven't driven the GTS yet, hopefully within the next 10 days. However I predict the GTS will be much more fun to drive and sound much better. Saying that it's a personal thing and I love the look of the turbo.

Yep the wife is fine with a Cab. Wouldn't be spanking it hard with kids in the car.

Callughan that's what I thought. GTS will be more fun. Exhaust note on the Turbo is disappointing whereas the GTS will have the sports exhaust. The badge isn't as good as the turbo & according to my OPC the supply of the GTS to the network will not be high so residual should be ok...... Tricky

If the 997 is anything to go by residuals will be strong. However price is high especially when you can buy a turbo or GT3 for not much more money.

It's a diff of 19k which I think is a big enough difference to consider the GTS. I want a GT3 but current gen is sold out so name at the top of the list for a next gen GT3 scheduled for end of 2016/ poss 2017

The way I was looking at it: 4 GTS is £95k +10/5k options, from OPC a used 991 turbo from 109k and used GT3 £124K obviously all before discount. I would personally go for GT3 and if I needed back seats then GTS with ducktail, as much as I like turbo after the kudos wore out for me sound and NA engine are a better match.

I'm not prepared to pay 15-20k over list for a used GT3 & the nearly new turbo Cabs that have been up for sale are 7+ months old & are saving only 3k on what I could get a new one for with discount. So for me new it is & subject to sleeping on it, it's the GTS this time round.

So you're considering one yourself then?

My view:

If money matters, the GTS is the first choice anyway.

If money doesn't matter, I personally would also go for the GTS. This is likely to become the last normally aspirated 911 that can be ordered with a manual gearbox, and, hence, I predict a strong increase in price in only a few years. Let alone the 430bhp. It comes also closest to the Ferrari you drove (convertible + unsupercharged), while being a better car for day-to-day usage. Also, thr sound is much better that in the Turbo.

Measured by the sheer punch the motor delivers, nothing compares to the Turbo, but I guess you wouldn't have started this thread if torque was the only thing you are looking for....

The Turbo will be so much quicker! Also, in a restrained colour scheme with PCCBs they look really something with help from those rather wide rear hips! GTS wouldn't get a look in from me, even though you'd be missing out on sound.

Drive both!

If money is no object - a 4GTS.

The Turbo might be quicker, but IMO the delivery is actually less satisfying.

The rear seating in the Coupe is generally more generous than the Cab (which has more vertical seat backs, which some px don't like). Not sure about the new Targas.

All turbos since 4 wheel drive have been, well, unrewarding one trick ponys and certainly not drivers cars.
Ive been watching all the youtube videos on the 991 turbo s and it seems as if Porsche have adressed the global disappointment and nailed it this time.

I think you should grab an hour or two in one before you make your mind up.

Going from a 458 into a GTS will feel like you're wearing lead boots and carrying bullion in the luggage compartment. I think it could be the turbo that you need.

Thanks guys. Some very valid points.

I've had the chance to drive the new turbo & it is insanely quick. As quick as the 458 with Sports/ Sports Plus mode. Sadly these top end sports cars- Porsches, Lamborghinis, Ferraris, probably the new R8 Audi will all have turbo engines - I've been informed even Lamborghini are going that way too due to CO2 emissions like Ferrari are now having to thanks European Buerocrats.....! I'm off to Florida next week & will be in a humongous 5.0 litre Suburban SUV for the holiday. They don't care much about CO2 over there & those American engines sound FANTASTIC!!!

The main reason for coming back to Porsche is because I can get away with using it for work. Sadly I couldn't do that with the F. Yes the sound of the GTS will be awesome & the 19k saving is appealing, but the sheer power of the Turbo is mind blowing with virtually no lag. Such a shame you don't get a good exhaust note & truthfully I didn't have many burnups in my 997 Turbo. I actually had many more people challenging me back when I had a GTR lol, so if I'm not going to truly benefit from that extra power, then the GTS is the one. Yes as recommended, I need to drive one.......

Will let you know my decision. Will be on the phone to the OPC tomorrow. They've already got a deposit so I need to know when I can drive one & finally decide.

Ive never been a buyer of aftermarket parts and always run my cars stock but having been considering a 991 Turbo S recently I found this page and some do seem very appealing smile

I'd get the Turbo 100% .

Imagine what the neighbours would think trading down to a normal 911 after a 458😜
