Manual 997 S if both cars are in the same condition.

If this is a 996 C4S with 40k miles and for sale at 911 Virgin or similar vs a 997 S on ebay with 100k miles and hasn't been serviced correctly, then 996

Manual 996 C4S. I wouldn't buy a Gen 1 997.

Doesn't like nice interiors, pretty looks, more speed and better reviews ;-)

For the same price then a 997, but like for like they're ~£5k more than a 996 C4S. Looks wise I'd say it's a tie, better front end on the 997 and better back end on the 996 C4S.

I have a 997.1 and a 996.1

The 997 is more visceral (in a good way) than the 996. Somehow it is less "soft".

996 C4S is less likely to depreciate. Much though I love my 996.1, I could be tempted by a 997.1 in your position.

Either way, it would be manual only.

997.1 3.6 non s on 18inch wheels. Pure 911, sweet chassis, less IMS issues/risk than the 3.8S

996 C4S is also a great drive and to many looks like a "future classic" of the non GT 996 range. Stands out more than 997 (particularly in silver). One of the best PSE's if it has one.

You cannot go wrong (with well looked after version of either). Look at and drive both and pick the one that does more for you and suits your budget.

Minus the tiptronic bit, if the car was midnight blue with a sand colour interior, I think it would look nice

Although much nicer in a 997

Yep that looks really nice, I like the 996 C4s but that does look better, the aero kit really sets it off.

I hope you enjoy it.
