Over Rev report query - 997 gts
Discussion
Hi All
I am in the process of buying a really nicely spec'd GTS from an OPC and they have today sent me details of the over revs.
About half way down the report (between ignition in Rev range 2 & 3) it says
M120_Misfire counter for every ignition 3307
Does anyone have any idea what this code means and whether I should be concerned?
OPC says they have serviced the car and it is running within normal parameters with no fault codes. It has passed the inspection and will come with 2 year porsche warranty.
For information the report shows 360 ignitions in Rev range 1 and no incursions in any of the other ranges.
Car is very low mileage (5k) and with fantastic options including carbon fibre bucket seats, alcantara with extended leather, Auto dimming mirrors and rain sensors, Bose, Clear tail lights, PCM with Nav, B-tooth and I-pod connection, Park Assist, Rear Seats, Colour coded side skirts, front and rear spoiler lip etc. Sport Chrono, And Sports shifter.
These cars seem to be holding their money (read - hope I haven't overpaid!) and with this spec, mileage and condition I think will be hard to find elsewhere. I want to go into this with my eyes wide open so any pointers or help would be gratefully received.
Thanks a lot.

get it bought rapidly. not many with that spec and any rr activity below level 4 irrelevant
Deposit is down & I'm supposed to be collecting on Sat so I don't think I'll get gazumped. Just concerned about 'misfires' as I've not seen this on a Rev range report before.IMIA said:
two year warranty so not an issue - have you asked them?
I figured 2 years warranty so I am covered but would like to know what 3307 misfires means. Coil packs? Other problems? The OPC have said
The misfire counter is info correlated by the control unit and is only monitored info. The way the info is gathered changes on VALS and the form it is stored so it cannot be manipulated (hence the misfire counter is in the middle of the over rev info). There are no fault codes so the engine is running within it normal parameters.
Which doesn't mean anything to me - lol!

It's relevant because, as you probably know, OPC won't renew warranty with hits in RR3 or above without further investigation. With RR1 hits only this car is fine. Never heard of the other issue before.

Could a failing/failed coil pack cause the misfires? If so it's not really a worry, 3,000 ignitions is 1,000 revolutions of the engine, so not many seconds of misfiriness in the scheme of things.
So one minute of misfires at tickover? And a lot less time if being driven. Doesn't seem so bad when you explain it that way. Thanks for your input Goose. Shiverman said:

Wasn't actually planning on buying, but once I saw it realised I couldn't pass it by with that spec and mileage. I hope you find your ideal one soon - they seem to be great cars.
Hi TheGoose - have rung a specialist and they are of the opinion that even things like trying to start the car on a flat battery can cause the misfires which are then logged in the ECU. Car was owned by a collector so this is possible. Their feeling from them was if it has been serviced and passes Porsche criteria for warranty then they would have no concerns with this.
Think I now need to start to get excited about Saturday!!

Thats the way. Get excited and stop worrying. Hope the weathers good for you and the car is great.

Could it be it was out of fuel and someone tried cranking it?
Or perhaps if a plug lead was off or something for a short time during a service?
As its only a few thousand reports I wouldn't worry too much. If it launches itself you will be covered.
That's exactly the thoughts of the specialist I called. http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/imgs/10.gifOr perhaps if a plug lead was off or something for a short time during a service?

As the previous poster said I need to start getting excited and not worrying!
Thanks everyone for your contributions and I'll post some pictures up once I collect it.
Pics seconded!
Have a great day on Saturday collecting it. I can remember collecting my GTS from 911 Virgin and the exciting build up to 'the day'!
Sounds a lovely spec car and sure you'll love it.
One upgrade you need to consider is the Sharkwerks rear silencer bypass to give it a proper 911 soundtrack as the 997.2 PSE is simply too quiet. Lots of GTS owners have gone down this route.
Enjoy!

Grrrrrr. Pick up delayed by a week due to cock up from the OPC with plate transfers. Pics will be delayed folks.
Chris - I had read the posts on the sharkwerks and its definitely on my list. I think I'm going enjoy the car first for a few weeks and then add it once Im over the initial excitement & want more. Can you PM me a price when you get the chance?
