Hi,
Just had my 997.2 c2s into Porsche hatfield for a misfire issue (fixed under warranty!) and they have reported corrosion and a crack in the center muffler. The quote for a replacement is just shy of a grand. Any advice on replacement exhausts that sound better than the factory fit, and hopefully a bit less than a grand for a single component replacement!

Also, any recomendations for an independant Service Center in Herts?

Thanks.

Matt.

Herts is well served with RPM (Marsworth), JAZ (St Albans), and JZ (Kings Langley.

Great chance to go for Sharkwerks centre muffler which would sound better and be a little lighter. Speak to Chris at ABP Motorsport.

This ^^^^. Improves the sound of the car no end. No resonance or droning. Also adds about 10 BHP in the upper half of the rev range as it eliminates 2 very tight 180 degree bends in the original silencer. I've had one on my car for 5 years now and it works really well.

If you want to stay with the car's standard spec, you may find used, standard, centre silencers on fleaBay (and similar) as they're replaced with a different part if someone has the PSE fitted.

Ian, isn't the centre muffler the same whether you have standard or PSE? It's just the two kidney mufflers behind the wheels that are different between the two systems.

And another +1 for the SharkWerks bypass to replace the centre muffler. Great piece of kit.

They replaced my centre silencer as part of a PSE retrofit.

The centre silencer is the same item on both standard and PSE systems as far as I am aware.

The Sharkwerks bypass pipe is a no-brainer in this case for the following reasons:
Sounds far better!
Is a cheaper option!
Releases between +10-12 BHP!

It transforms the soundtrack and gives the 997.2 a proper Porsche noise.

We've sold almost 20 in the UK now with great feedback and have them in stock ;-)

It's definitely replaced with an identical-looking (externally) part when PSE is fitted. Whether it's actually a different part internally, I honestly don't know. If it isn't, then Porsche is being seriously naughty charging its customers for an un-needed, identical part.

Thanks everyone! Some really useful comments and guidance here.

I like the idea, and sound of the Sharkwerks solution. One follow up up question - How much louder is it thatn the standard pipe on startup and tick over? I live in a village in Hertfordshire and dont want to annoy the neighbours too much! I dont mind when i am on the road and open her up, but the early morning start and crawl from the village is a concern. Is the bypass pipe a lot louder??

Thanks,

Chris - I will give you a call for a quote.....

On start-up they're quite loud anyway until the idle speed drops and I would say the Sharkwerks is only marginally (if at all) louder during start up. I tend to open the valves once I turn off my estate (unless my two boys are encouraging me for a loud departure!) to avoid any dispute - although not likely as opposite me lives a 928 with sports system which is his daily driver!

Keep meaning to add this to the other thread.

I was at the RS day at Oulton the other day and I asked them to noise test me. I have PSE on my car and the Sharkwerks bypass.

On static test it was coming in at only 101db with the exhaust in quiet mode.

By comparison my 996 GT3 with completely stock exhaust consistently records 105-107db on static.
