i read somewhere that there is a common problem with the cable from the alternator to the battery. can anyone expand on this. having fitted a new battery, i'm wondering if there could be other issues.

Very common fault, there are 3 possible cables that can corrode over time as they are too exposed to the road, can't remember the exact detail but one is battery to alternator. If any of them start to fail the car exhibits hot start problems, ie you drive somewhere, park up and then attempt to restart a few mins later the car turns over very sluggishly. Any decent indi garage can diagnose which cable is at fault, and replace, cost me about £150 all in so not too bad. It was really spoiling my enjoyment of the car before but a quick fix. A new battery can't hurt too as they are typically only good for so long, hopefully you didn't pay £300 from Porsche for one
