TPMS on constant "Learning" - turns out one sensor has a dead battery. Porsche claim it's not possible to replace the power unit. The car is 8 years old so expect other 3 units to die imminently. Total cost £800! Really?

Hi you have to replace both on each axle, as they have been modified, so you replace fronts first and programme to car.

I had to replace all 4 on a 997 Turbo to get system to work.

You shouldn't have to. I have replaced just one before

I had this on my old 997 turbo too. They are just filled with batteries thats all that eventually die and yes you have to buy the whole unit - you do not have to replace all 4 it is true but your dealer through the Porsche diagnostics can tell you how much battery life is roughly left on the others.
I ended up ordering mine on TPMS.com much cheaper than here in the UK especially from OPC's and i got the Huf/Beru brand which are the Porsche OEM ones. There are a lot cheaper ones but I had heard stories of them not linking well with the cars systems. I got a local tyre fitter to put them in for me and saved lots of cash only word of warning..it took quite a while before the system learnt all the sensors again and the dash warning light went out..hope this helps.

I believe that they have an expected lifetime of around 7-8 years, so while you don't need to replace them all at once, if the car is 8 years old then you would expect the others to fail soon.

Exeter did mine on my 997 C4S for around £400, when most were trying to charge £600.

A bit of negotiation with OPCs should see the bill reduce.

I got a set of Titan TPMS sensors from the US for around £120 a set of 4 for my winter wheels on my 981 and they work just fine.

I think they have sets for 997 so perhaps worth a try? Do a search on ebay and select worldwide (ask the seller if compatible to confirm)

Edit: Don't see them on ebay now

Here's a link to them direct... perhaps email them?

Bought mine here http://www.tpms.com/2008_Porsche_911_Turbo_TPMS_s/...

Got them in my spare wheels and gave done for a year so far with no issues, would replace my OE ones when they go too

Cost about £250 for 4 with valve stems inc. import tax

New sensors all show 96 months battery life on my car. Would therefore assume 7-8 years is about your lot.

Thanks guys. Some great advice and ideas. It made sense to change them all because as you kindly pointed out the life expectancy is 7-8 years. The diagnostics showed only a few months each on the remaining 3 wheels.

However the OPC has come up trumps and done the lot for £200.

An Indy tends to quote around £600 ex VAT - your £200 is amazing. The best I've got from an OPC is £603 inc VAT. frown

Well done smile
