Me neither but even at 90k there isn't an alternative if you like mad turbocharged Porsches. The GT2s were crazy bargains at 40-50k, I never understood why they got so cheap. Still some cheap cars around if you like me don't mind LHD

...especially on 996's. there's nothing remotely iconic about them to justify those prices.
Rob, I came to 911's quite late. I had a 996.2, then a 997.1 then went back to the 996.2. I preferred the fact that it is the last analogue porsche with no driver aids (unless you count ABS). The looks have grown on me although I much prefer the 997. On looks, my theory is that time somehow softens the eye with regards to design. Hell, I went to the NEC classic show a couple of years back and felt a fondness for a mint Austin Maxi 1750 from my childhood. At the time we hated it, but the older a car is the better we perceive it it seems. Nostalgia kicks in see. And so it is with the 996 and it's lights. I seem to love them now. Nick. (Oh, and of course I absolutely love driving it).

Yeah and dont get me started on 70's 911's costing 100s of thousand of pounds.

Just old cars. I don't get it rolleyes
Much as I love the iconic 73rs I cannot get my head round the values £6-700k++, if I had money to burn I still couldn't justify that sort of outlay, forget the build numbers why is it more of a car than an SC or a 3.2?

started looking through the classifieds and have noted the extraordinary prices being asked for 996 gt variants. a gt3rs for £120k odd!!!! a gt3 mk1 for £70k odd!!!! a gt2 for £90k or so. what sort of fool buys those cars for those prices!!!

they were nice cars 10 or 15 years ago, but ultimately they are old cars now. the gt cars would have been tracked hard (they were when i used to do track days).

i wonder who has my old red gt2 with clubsport spec (mk1 996) and what the sort of value of it would be now. they did look good back in the day but now 996's just look old and crap (except for the c4s which somehow still looks awesome) but that's just my opinion!

interested if anyone has an answer to this.
Yeh, I can't think why anyone would be upset by your comments ........ scratchchin I mean, how much much more cordial could you have been ?

FYi, my understanding is (from someone who knows the individual who crashed it) your old car perished in an inferno after being shunted at speed. Another case of someone mistaking ambition for ability behind the wheel of a '6 GT2.

Anyway, enjoy your RS'ed 991 GTS, I'm sure it'll be triffic wink Don't forget to paint the wheels blue/red and stick decals down the sides/around the bumpers will you vomit

smile

I can't remember when it was registered to be honest. I put my private plate on it but I remember vaguely the number plate being Y719 or Y971. Can't remember the 3 letters after that. Bought it from Porsche Reading..

Anyway apologies if I annoyed people. My choice of words was careless and throw away in my original post. They are good cars, ultimately I'm simply saying I wouldn't pay that sort of money for them as I don't see that value reflecting them being that good..

That reg date would make it a Y - the other GR cars I know of would be on the newer style plates as they're after August 2001.

The reg I have for that car shows as the last MOT date was 20 May 2011 - does that tie in with when it was 'allegedly' written off?

I'm not annoyed, everyone's welcome to an opinion - personally I couldn't face throwing 100k at a 991 as they feel a bit dumbed down to me, a 996 GT car is a totally different experience and to some of us I guess that will always be worth something.

Pretty sure I almost bought that 996 GT2 in red about 9 years ago when I was looking for a turbo. It was the same price (60k?) and stood next to the Midnight Blue 996 turbo I bought instead, thinking the GT2 was probably too much as a first Porsche. It was at RSJ, I remember the white stickers at the arches but not the stripes.

According to Joel it was going to New Zealand at one point, though I also vaguely recall he reckoned that deal fell through.

Private seller...flying a kite. Can't blame him.

Serious question then... were there 16 in the UK because they were limited, or because no one wanted one?

57 996s on there at the moment, yours has just gone on, could do with some more info and pictures of it smile

http://www.autoinsider.co.uk/carclubs/registers/re...

22 still to add, have the photos and details, so 79 in total. There are some more with flaky info so I'm not adding them yet.

I have the registrations and other info in the background - it's not massively useful without this data displayed but I don't want to upset anyone with wrong info or reg plates on show.
