Had a venture up to Perth scotland today to buy a 89 G Carrera 3.2 coupe, in black with linen...for a customer so needed to have a good look at it, car was in a classic car auction and was estimated at 18-20K...details in brochure were a little scant, and often its what isnt said, rather than what is.

So the car....

10 owners (not a biggie)

12 service stamps, last serviced 12 YEARS AGO at 78000 miles, car now done 78800 so obviously been stored.

Leak from gearbox

Interior needed work but was "all there" and would have prepped up ok

12 years ago the car had had an impact to the front, the bill for that repair and some other paint issues were £6K...the paintwork was decent without been great.

Car did £31750 to an online buyer who hadnt viewed the car....+5% commission (and VAT on the commission).

Air cooled prices really are crackers.

Interesting - how much money would she need to be spent on her to make her the car she should be? Worst case? Guessstimate I realise its not a perfect science...

that estimate did seem a little low, can't think what £19k would really buy you in late G50 car these days...not a lot. What did the other lots make? I was at Coys in Ascot last weekend and most of the bidding seemed to be coming from the continent, although someone in the room bid and got a rather nice '64 turbo.

I reckon 3-4k, problem is it then owes you 31750 + 5% comm + vat + say 4k (repairs) = close to 40k , and it's a 10 owner car that's had an awful lot of paintwork

Estimate was a little low on the face of it .

Some good prices, Jensens were strong, sporty escorts didn't meet their very high reserves..lotus Europa had awful paintwork ...many internet buyers buying unseen .

My maths ain't up to much but surely the vat was only on the commission?
So around £1600 plus vat = £1920 plus purchase price which is around 34k?

Still mad money mind for an unseen car (If my maths are correct).

Don't forget the other big negatives.

No servicing for 12 YEARS !!!!
800 miles in 12 years. (that's assuming it had been stored and the mileage is correct)
£6k of repairs to the front, not repaired that well. Over 12 years ago, that must have been pretty heavy, surprised it wasn't bad enough to put it on the Register ( Cat D etc.)
Then all the other 'Hidden extras' Leaky gearbox, If its not been used for 12 years then, Exhaust, Heat exchangers, Engine issues, maybe even needs a rebuild. Sills, B posts, Kidney bowls. All the normal 3.2 stuff.

Very Risky to buy blind, at anything over £15k, that's if you even want it at all.
The missing 12 services and Accident history are with the car for life.

Much better cars about even now, that would cost you less than what this one potentially could.

Me and my dad went to this auction with an interest in this car also ( I rekon there were at least 7 or 8 genuinely interested parties). In my opinion you could easily have spent £5-6k to get it looking really nice.
