Well in my part of the world both the 996 and 997 are getting cheaper and cheaper.

I paid the equivalent of £30k for my 2007 gen 1 turbo. 1 owner, OPC warranty and 38k on the clock. Every time I look at our version of auto trader the cars are still falling in price. There's a 996T S for sale at just over £24k albeit with 89k on the clock but you get the idea.

The air cooled cars are holding value even with mileage reaching or over 100k but I really don't think similar will happen with the water cooler turbos. At least where I live anyway.

Guess that means I can do as intended and drive it until the wheels fall off and not car about resale value or mileage.

I agree so much I bought one smile

Looks are subjective, some may prefer 997, some 996 - but it's very odd to find someone who hates the other, after all they are fundamentally the same shape with just detail changes.

For me the 997 front is better, round lights cleaner and more iconic 911, and the grilles are less gapey (I would only buy a dark colour 996t as it disguises the grilles somewhat). I also prefer the rear of 997 as the wider spoiler looks much better, from the side the 996 is slightly cleaner. I used to dislike the 997.1 wheels but like money Porsche design cues I find I get used to them and then really like them, never been much wrong with the old 993/6 turbo wheels though. Interior wise 997 wins hands down and the seats are finally supportive and comfortable

I just don't like them, if I was able to say how I felt they looked on here
I would but we are not allowed to say things like that anymore, just
like many things that are not allowed anymore in the UK for certain
reasons. And then there is the drive, suspension is crap, steering is
woolen with no feel, its less of a drivers car and more of a prop for people
that want to tick the 911 Turbo box and just want as new a one is possible to look
as good as possible, most of these muppets cant drive anyway, that said I have
met very few individuals capable of taking these cars to the limit.
No, The 996 is the perfect Turbo, clean and simple with old school design cues,
its sts on a 993T performance wise and isn't as much a of an aesthetic as
the 7. Porsche hit the nail on the head with it and that's why the prices
are going caboom on them, soon to overtake your diluted 997 prop.

Now do give me a moment to go and get a tank and a Gerry helmet then feel
free to start gunning, I have a hide like leather so don't hold back.
Call me the dice in the pack, the Jack Russell in amongst the hounds.

My old grandfather (92) has a story he tells of a hunt he used to witness
up here in Scotland back in the 50s, the beater would run ahead and warn
everyone in the village that the hounds were due through and to stay clear,
because they can be evil and attack anything when they move as a team, anyway
he would stand back and watch the hounds bound through, and every time there
slap bang in the middle of these some 20 odd dogs was a Jack Russell, it was
game as f**k, it was all battle scarred with lumps out and it loved it, it
snapped at the heels of the hounds working them all up into a bloody lather
until they were all but attacking each other, perfect, oh it had earned its
place alright......

Rather like this thread.

righto, well you have a style certainly

assuming you are not just trying to wind people up for a laugh, why are limits for 997t so much higher than .... actually don't bother.

As my mother used to say, "don't argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience"

laugh Nice try! Now come on, be honest, you can tell us: you've been humbled by a 997 turbo driver in the recent past, haven't you?
There, there. Don't let it get to you, it's just not worth it. Accept it and move on. wink

Yeah that's the one, I have just been made, the secret is oot, lol.
It would take rather a special 7 to take my 6 and even if it did it
would not change the looks or the mentality of the guy who bought it
now would it.

I like that Red Devil's posts are laid out like a poem!

In fairness, i've just looked in the classified and a comparison of manual cars with similar mileages shows the 996T and 997T are the same money!

For the record though, i think the 996 Turbo is fugly. I do also think the wheels on the 997.1 Turbo are also fugly, but the overall car is much better to look at.

Firstly, for the purpose of full disclosure, I declare and interest; I own a 996 turbo.

Aesthetics of 996 vs. 997...

Exterior
I find the 6 has a 'cleaner' look and picks up some styling cues - especially the intercooler vents behind the rear wheels - from the 959.

Hands-down the 7 looks far more modern, more chiseled, but also a bit fussier. I do like the way the exhausts are let into the bumper, but I'm less convinced about the evolution of the input and output vents for the intercoolers.

IMHO front bumpers on both 6 and 7 look clumsier than the 6 GT2.

Interior
The 6 has an old school feel and ergonomics for the ICE are poor. It is nice in that nearly-classic car kind of way though and the instrument binnacle itself is pretty good.

The 7 is just streets ahead in terms of design and ergonomics. Unless you are really sold on driving something which feels like it harks back to an earlier decade, there is no contest.

Thanks for your honesty.

I think this thread has gone slightly off track!!!

The thread was discussing 997 turbo prices not 997 vs 996.

They are both fantastic cars and during the past 18 months prices of 996 turbos have risen from nearly 50% of the price of a 997 turbo to nearly similar prices.

Upon reflection Im gutted that I didn't purchase a 996 turbo or a 996 GT2 18 months ago purely from an investment prospective.

On a long enough timeline, both will look 'old', in a very similar way, and it really becomes more an issue of personal preference. You would expect the Mezger-engined cars to retain a bit of favour, but for there to be equal (but different) justifications for a 6 or a 7. In a way, this merging of prices might reflect and early shift.

Cheer up! Look at it this way, you've had 18 months not having to replace clutches, heatshields, turbos, radiators, gear selectors etc. etc. hehe

That's right, and with the help of some threads created over the last 18 months the
prices keep going up, everything has design....Its called the upshot of a free market.
And if you want to have a laugh with a few threads then great, or simply made a fool
of then that's fine too..
