Hi Guys,

Just got my hands on a lovely 996 turbo which is great fun. From all the reading around, I was expecting the exhaust to be fairly quiet and was planning on potentially swapping to a set of Europipes at sometime in the future. What I've found is quite the opposite (which is a good thing), though just wondering if other owners find that you definitely know its a Porsche on tickover, or gentle pootling. Any attempts to compare pics of the underneath online hasn't helped me confirm either (I can take a photo if that helps).

Thanks in advance!

Take a photo, I'm in the same boat, love the stock sound.

I think there is a difference between the std turbo exhaust and the x50 exhaust, fairly certain the x50 shares the same as the GT2 and slightly less restricted - would explain things for me. Is yours x50 or non-x50?

Standard exhaust is fairly recognisable:

I'll try and check the pic next time I get mine out of the garage, and also take a pic.

Nice. Mine is a non-x50, so I am a little more confused to the noise level (or have more sensitive ears that most!).

Cheers

I also think the standard exhaust is fine. Frankly, the car draws enough attention as it is and I would like to maintain some level of stealth !!

Yeah, I think it sounds about right, not too noisy though you know it's a Porsche. He he....definitely!

Have a look into the exhaust tail pipe. If you see and egg shaped hole, someone may have used a hole saw to bypass a section of the muffler. Its a common mod in the states and fairly straight forward to do. If you search the net there's a 50+ page thread on the 6speedonline forum about it. May have to give it a go myself before chicking a grand plus at an aftermarket exhaust.

That reminds me, I need to stick a Techart exhaust up for sale. Bought it off a member on here and never fitted it.

Mines almost too loud. On a scale of 1 to 10 what's the tech art like? I'm looking for something a bit quieter. Been looking at the milltek. Are they ok?

No idea i'm afraid! never fitted it. Previous owner raved about it, but he would since he was selling it to me! Milltek I hear are one of the most docile, worth an option for you? what are you running?

Turns out mines already running the milltek exhaust. Looks like I'll have to use ear plugs instead lol

Well try a standard exhaust? Suggest X50/GT2

As and when I get along to any 996t meets, I'd be interested to hear what the Miltek sounds like!

I gutted the cats (four of the buggers!) on mine and then did the holesaw mod. Feels faster - those cats look enormously restrictive - and still sounds muted compared to my 996 Carrera. I do miss that NA sound...
