I've been looking at buying a 996TT over the past few months and have seen this tuned one up for sale, which on the face of it seems good value considering all the work it's had http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...

My only worries are it's a Tip, I wasn't really looking at anything other than a manual so don't really know to much about reliability or being ok with the extra power output.
Also I've noticed that it's changed from one dealer to another over the past week and is £2k cheaper than previously seems an odd thing to me

Maybe phone 9Excellence and ask them about the gearbox capabilities?

I doubt they'd tune a car if it couldn't take it.

Looks like a fun ride!

Some 996 turbo owners love the tip as they say it suits the turbo's character.

On the price it was probably a Sale Or Return (SOR) at one dealer and hasn't sold so moved to another dealer at a lower price.

Go and drive it and see if you like it.

Sounds great and a great colour. In fact the mods would encourage me personally as it has all been professionally done. It's just the tip versus manual conundrum.. Go and look and drive.

Don't recall the details and too lazy to do a search but the Turbo Tip is a pretty robust transmission, same as or similar to the ones used in the big powerful M-B's.

'course, there is a limit. You might search out what you can on the Turbo Tip and what else it is used in and see if you can come up with max torque it is exposed to and then see if the mod'ed Turbo's output is under, at, or over that.

Even if under generally a mod'd car is going to get driven harder so the Tip (along with everything else) is going to live a tougher life.

Be sure if you are really interested you give the car a thorough used car check out. Arrange for a test ride then a test drive. You want to spend around an hour at or in the car with the engine running and the car on the road so you can experience it in its natural state. Pay close attention to everything but pay extra attention to the Tip, how it shifts going up and down the gears under easy and moderate to hard driving.

Dealer has got back to me via email, sent an hpi report and said they have three viewers already, no reply to my request for a ppi.

Where do I stand if dealer refuses a ppi? I wouldn't want to be in a position where I buy car, take to a specialist and be told it needs "xyz" working doing and it'll cost hundreds of pounds.

Agree to buy subject to PPI. Dealer should have no issues.

I seem to recall this one being for sale (and presumably sold) at Portiacraft not that long ago?

I could be wrong, but prob worth checking how long last reg keeper had it for, as it might only be months and if so, try and find out reason why it is back for sale so quick? Could be a perfectly normal reason but I would be checking it.

agreeing to buy on terms of ppi seems a good way to go.

The car was up with Porticraft, just two weeks ago I believe, not sure if the car is on sor with the owner or not?

Agreed. Walk, no wait, make that run away from any car where the dealer does anything other than encourage you to be satisfied with the provenance and quality.

That turbo recently posted about that had done 570,000 miles was a tip so I wouldn't be too concerned about reliability!

Never you mind

Its local to me that dealership. Used to be Pure Lotus. Good reputation as far as I know.

I'm not doing anything this weekend so I can have a poke around it if you want.
