So, a strange topic you may think, but a year a ago I bought my wife a nice condition 996. During the last year we have experienced a number of incidents that we can only think are aimed at the car rather than the driver.

One the way to work my wife's 996 was rammed in the side on a roundabout - turned out the driver of the other car was trying to make a false insurance claim and thought the Porsche was a good bet for a well insured claim - unlucky for him he was insured twice and one of these companies was a sister company to our own insurance company. His solicitors then dropped the case stating they were investigating their own driver and our won company is sorting this out.

A few weeks ago my wife beeped a driver at a very busy roundabout for texting rather than pulling out, she experienced a massive road rage reaction aimed just as much at the car than the driver it would seem.

We also find being let out of a side road is much more difficult in the 996, unless another 911 comes along

Have others experienced this or is it just us?

Get completly the opposite in my 993, only friendly waves and no problems getting let out.

I have driven Porsches for years. I cannot say I have had massive problems.

Yes, occasionally a fat middle-aged father in a Renault Megane will not let me out of a junction, in an attempt to share some of his misery. More frequently I get lads tailgating me, or wanting to race, which I put more down to enthusiasm than malice.

But then I do tend to drive defensively and don't rise to the bait on the occasions when people do appear to be looking for a reaction / race / argument.

I had a first stab at Porsche ownership. Had a GT3 for 2 years (LOVED IT) but couldn't believe the amount of 'coffee bean' type incidents. Was almost laughable, I was even warned of it prior to purchase by a Porsche nut friend of mine who amusingly happened to be in the car for my first Kenco moment! Lol...

Now sold the Porsche (not for this reason) and gone back to Ferrari ownership. The Scud gets nothing but a thumbs up. smile

I do feel for some unknown reason Porsches can attract some negative attention. Shame as they are brilliant cars...

I know exactly what you mean. I get raced, cut off or sworn at a lot mainly by frustrated, middle aged guys in "loaf"-cars (people carriers looking like a loaf of bread, like VW Sharan, etc., etc.) or Korean SUVs, especially on downhill stretches of motorways. They do look a bit strained when they realize, that this old machine does over 200 km/h easily uphill too. Also, in the countryside they usually work very hard to either stay in front of me, or keeping up with me; I often see them slide and swerve either in front of me or in the mirror.

In my case the color probably has a lot to do with it - speed yellow! I have no idea why, but my impression is, that it makes them even more crazy and eager to show the bd in the yellow Porsche where he really does belong...

It happens. Sadly there will always be idiots out there. I was in my Ferrari 550 one morning driving through a sleepy village, sun was out, windows open, poodling along minding my own business. Two workman tiling a roof heard me coming and as I drove by one of them shouted literally at the top of his voice 'you complete f•••••g w••••r'. Did slightly take the shine off an otherwise perfect moment, but you can't let them drag you down. It's just pure unadulterated envy. Simple as that.

I can honestly say I've never had any negative reactions in my 996... the junction I use to get on to the main road every morning is horrendously busy, but I rarely have to wait for a car or two before someone lets me out.

Get the odd young kid in a Corsa (or similar), with a silly exhaust trying to race me, but that's about it.

Yep , had exactly the same. What is wrong with people ? Was driving in a convoy of 3 of us which consisted of my clubsport and 2 x Rs`s . The bloke in the van coming the opposite way was frenzied in his actions... it was if we had killed his mother or something. Utterly incomprehensible ....

Its just you.

If your stories were typical then insuring a Porsche would be VERY expensive!

I must say my white 991 GT3 has had loads of compliments, to my surprise. In petrol stations I have nothing but, beautiful car, sexy car, all those things. Had a guy take pictures of it on Saturday while filling up. No probs then as of yet.

I was driving down an inner-city ex council estate in the 996, had to drive past a group of yoofs. All stood back and even said nice car mate.... thx lads. I expected the complete opposite.

Just after I got the 996 last year 1 nobber in his Jap (I think) starship chod box tried to race me, I declined and he then decided to give me the v's at the next roundabout. I assumed his life was incomplete in some way.
Ive had the "you earn too much" comments. I'm past caring and explaining you can get a much newer family car for more than I paid for the 996.

Enjoy the car knowing you made a great choice. Jealousy does funny things.

I think the most frustrating occasion was driving round the one way system in Blackheath when i noticed a driver of a parked car open the passenger door to let his young child out. Having quickly learned some people - especially parents - find a loud GT3 fairly intimidating, i took a very wide berth and slipped into neutral to coast past them at the minimum noise at about 10mph.

Despite this, the father gave me the coffee bean shake. I was so annoyed about this that i wanted to stop to point out i was completely aware of the situation and took all neccessary precautions. However, the reality is that you will face envy like this at some point. I accept that owning a white sportscar is somewhat 'asking' for it. However, i'm pleased to say it is outweighed by the overall positive response from fellow enthusiasts, bikers and passers by.

As i park on the street, i also realise that emphasises the 'you're asking for it' argument. When i had my sensible grey 997 C4S someone had walked over it (footprints over the roof) and i parked my dad's subtle black 991 at mine the other week to find a Dominos box on top of it in the morning.

Ultimately, if there are many of these perennial unachievers around, it's good to know that there will always be opportunities around for those willing to work for it! That helps stem the initial rage smile

In the few weeks since I've had my first Porsche, there have been 3 times when I've had to slow down on the twisty country lanes near my house for fear that the nut-job in my mirror is going to kill himself trying to keep up with me. I might have a sticker made that reads "I have better brakes than you" stuck to the back of my retractable spoiler.

Try driving the cabriolet version chaps and the hatred is even closer.

Probably deserved though for a bald man driving an open top sports car

I must confess though of all the cars I have had, this one does attract the most hostility for some reason and I have had decatted TVRs and received nothing but positivity. Even the Italian is well received

Oh well , at least it gets a reaction I suppose...
