Makes me laugh to read these posts, I am sure like most of you guys we work bloody hard to get the money together to buy our dream cars. Unfortunately some people think anyone who drives a non standard mass produced car is a Tosser. Fact is I have had a few expensive cars over the years and all of the Porsche owners I have met have been a great bunch of guys and down to earth. It's a shame people don't all think the same way and thanks to the guys in Leiicester the other day who give several hand Gestures to me while I was driving minding my own business with my young daughter. Rant over lol.

I think this depends on the age - I had a 1988 Guards Red 3.2 Carrera Sport and all I ever got was huge smiles - people loved it , loads of positive attention . Also had a 991 GT3 - never got any hostility , in truth , thinking about it , I never got any reaction what so ever - a bit odd really ( not that I wanted the attention - enjoyed the anonymity in the 3) smile

Neither have I Rich, ever. But then I tend to thrash through the hills, not burble through the centre of town ...in second.
Doesn't excuse the behaviour of some or examples on here, but there a a number of 'enthusiasts' that are regularly seen accelerating to the next red light at warp speed who do attract some negative attention. Tarnishes the rest unfortunately.

Coming up to 4 years in a GT3 RS and cant think of anything overly worrying. Day of collection sitting at 70 on the A1 and a guy in a Rover 200 pulls alongside giving me the coffee beans, other than that normal excitable 'kids' who just want to race or take photos.

Try driving the cabriolet version chaps and the hatred is even closer.

Probably deserved though for a bald man driving an open top sports car

I must confess though of all the cars I have had, this one does attract the most hostility for some reason and I have had decatted TVRs and received nothing but positivity. Even the Italian is well received

Oh well , at least it gets a reaction I suppose...
Yup, 996 cab and you get all sorts of aggro, drive a noisy Griff and it's thumbs up pretty much everywhere biggrin

There is something about a guy wearing a swimming cap in a open top though. I certainly have never opted for a open top, leave that to the girlies. Each to there own though.

Could not agree more. Saw a white Boxster spyder in my local town recently - seemed to be stuck in first with sports exhaust on. Obviously thought he looked and sounded cool. :roll eyes:

Hi Rob , hope you are well ?

I go completely the other way - very strict on speed in built up areas , no sports exhaust , no window down radio blasting , etc smile

Loving some of the comments so far. Nothing major in terms of negative comments: Boxster S - nothing negative; 993 - someone kindly gobbed on the door handle; 996 turbo - chewing gum & current drive 997 C2S - nothing negative so far. I have had many tailgaters though & people wanting to 'race' me. Sometimes I don't rise to it but sometimes I do. But have also had some nice comments along the years of Porsche ownership - "nice car mate". The best was when I had the 996 turbo. I was making progress on an empty dual carriageway & noticed this yellow dot in the rear view mirror & suddenly this gallardo was alongside me & gave me the thumbs up & then disappeared.

Happens all the time in my Cayenne. Coffee bean shakes a plenty. Rather frustrating. Get cut up almost like it's a pre-emptive strike! frown

I had a man compliment my car in tescos car park the other day. It was the first time that ever happened, I was so taken aback I just sort of mumbled thanks and scurried off.

I've had a Porsche in the garage since 2007, a white 997 GT3 since 2010.

I've never had a negative incident to date, the GT3 has just receive compliments (petrol station regularly) and I don't find people are hostile when trying to get out of junctions.

It may be where you live. It's not particulary valuable compared to the other exotica in central london (I'm fairly central) so people are used to seeing Porsches in London, and only the savvy know what a GT3 is.

I have reached an age where I can honestly say that others view of my car (especially strangers) is of nil interest to me. It just doesnt even register.

The last guy that gave me the coffee bean shake (cant remember why), i blew him a big kiss and he was steaming! Red faced and shouting inside his car!

I laughed for about an hour!

I regularly get chavs in Saxos/Polos tailgating me or going for some dumb-assed overtake somewhere in a 30/40 speed limit. I find that incredible...do they actually think a 1.0 litre hatchback with a load of Halfords crap nailed to it is actually going to be faster on a road where it's safe to open the taps a bit?

Also had two mouth breathers coming the other way coffee-bean an entire convoy of about 22 Porsches leaving a meet. Boxsters, 911s, Caymans all in convoy and he had his hand out the window for the entire line. Intelligent chap obviously.

Plus some little tracksuit wearing teenage scrote shout "POOR MAN'S PORSCHE" at me when driving through town once. Had to reply with "when you're old enough to drive a 911, do please come and show it to me" much to the hilarity of his mates.

But generally people are complimentary and sensible...granted people might be less rude about an old 986, but I've had nice remarks, the odd wave or thumb up from fellow petrolheads (not just Porsche drivers) and on more than one occasion drivers...even white van drivers...who have moved over a bit or given it a quick bit of left indicator in places where an overtake might just be possible. Happy days.

You've got to admit that's quite funny - the guys must have thought it was Christmas come early. I can just imagine a little bell going off in their heads with each car they passed. Ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding...

Agree with this. I was excited to see a speed yellow 991 GT3 turn on to Kensington High Street a couple of weeks ago... The driver then proceeded to floor it through the gears (well, 2 of them), wheelspin, hitting the limiter, exhaust on loud... In central London... Really?

Imho... Tragic.

So, my wife uses this car (1998 996 Carrera) for her daily commute, she wouldn't know how to make a lot of noise if she tried but she does really love the car.

gauging from the replies so far its not uncommon for these cars to attract attention from the wrong people

Its disappointing - I guess - perhaps jealousy?

I think the irony as someone mentioned is that the cost of them (996's anyway) is probably less than some of the cars the other 'jealous' people are driving rolleyes

I had a TVR Tuscan 6 years or so ago now, one lovely summers day I pulled up outside the Albion Pub in Winchester waiting for the lights to change.
There was a group of lads outside having a beer, one said “ Bet you got a small Penis”, as I had the roof off, they could see me clearly, I looked at my Gentleman’s vegetables area, looked at the lads, and said calmly, “no” que much laughter from his mates smile

In my 996t no W-kers signs or anything negative to date, usual candidates wanting a race etc, I ignore them these days and just smile,, only slight irritation I have found so far is white van man up your behind, but then again this is not solely a Porsche thing!
