Hi chaps, would value your opinion.

I have a 996TT. Its a manual in mint condition and nice colour. Its not cost much apart from routine servicing over two years and feels great.
With two kids, i have stopped climbing the car price ladder - it represents the maximum i will ever spend on a car.
The mrs and kids love the car, as do I.
But I'm getting a tiny bit bored with it. Not because of the car itself - it is an exhilarating thing and i love looking at it - i still can't believe i own one!
The boredom is derived from the 'itch'. That annoying urge for a change. In this case for another high revver, and/or something old (dare i say it 'slower').
Also a touch more family trip capability would mean i use it more.

The question then:
Keep the car (probably for ever!) - and live with the itch.
Or a get a new one

Reasons to keep:
Good residuals
Wont be able to afford another 911 if I sell
Is a proper sports car and can take 2+2
Very exhilarating

Reasons to sell:
Something very expensive going wrong (remember those two kids - they eat the cash that was one freely flowing for the toys!)
The itch
Could probs free up some cash and still get a great car

If i sell, what could i get? It has to take 2+2, be a proper sports car, be non-turbo and 'special'.
All i get to is an M3

Any experiences or opinions that could help warmly received!

Hi.
I was in a similar situation, not exactly the same though. I had a 996 cabrio which I'd had for seven years, but my criteria for its replacement was kind of similar.... I initially went out and bought a Maserati 4200 which did the trick when it worked, but it spent so much time back at the dealers I bought it from, I got a full refund after 6 months. I wasn't concerned about being turbo or N/A and I now have a 135 cabrio, which after a bit of work is now on a par with the maser for performance. It has just enough room in the back for my boys (9 and 6) and they love it, especially the noise from the (slightly modified) exhaust.
You probably won't consider the 135 as a sports car, but I think they represent great value and offer good performance.
Just thought I'd offer it up as a suggestion. My mates just bought an m3 so I'll be trying that out shortly and see what the drive is like in comparison. I've only driven older m3s, e46 I think, but was left underwhelmed.
Good luck with the search.

Drive around a few garages in your 996TT and test drive some other cars; the salesmen will be all over you(r car....)

That will satisfy the itch and probably demonstrate that you won't get much that can compare for the money!

The Turbos don't have a particularly bad reputation for big bills.

"The itch" is a nightmare, though; cost me a lot of money over the years!!

Thanks guys much appreciated. I've driven the e90 m3 a few times and love the engine. I just have this dread that I'll look out at it after a few months and it will feel less special than the then unnatainable turbo!

I always fancies a 997s gen 2. May have a look to see that could be a swap. Anyone out there gone from turbo to 997s?

I've got a gen 2.997 turbo and an M3 as a daily driver.

With the recent large rise in 996 turbo values I would be extremely tempted to sell the 996 turbo if I owned one.
However you could take the view that their vale could rise further and it's worth keeping.

Thanks bikeracer - what type of m3 is it and would you ever consider choosing it over the turbo if there could be only one?

I'm fortunate to have both a 996TT and an E92 M3 coupe.
The Turbo is faster, handles better, has more presence on the road, very sure footed in all weathers and can pretty much monster my favourite B roads even the tight and twisty ones, it's pretty relaxing to drive fast basically a for wheeled rocket sled....but.....
I love my M3, its got character, the V8, it does stealth, the V8, mild mannered tractable pootling round town, the V8, comfy cruising for four easy, the V8, and it's fun in the twisties not relaxing to to drive fast, and did I mention the noise of the V8, and boy it loves to rev......and drink.
In summary the Turbo is the sensible car to keep and is already a classic but..... the M3 I'd find that hard to replace.

My shortlist to go and check out would be something like:

- 997 C2S. So many of these out there so plenty to choose from. You get a nice interior upgrade from your current car, and a higher revving engine but obviously it won't be as quick. Looks are subjective.

- C63 AMG, either coupe, wagon or saloon. Incredible noise and grunt from the V8.

- E90 M3 V8 - I think the saloon is the better looker.

Your car has Mezger engine which was also fitted to the 996 and 997 GT3 ( NA) and the 996 and 997 GT2 ranges. It is derived from the lemans winning GT1 engine and almost identical to the 996,997 and the current 992 cup engines - NA ( stroke differences aside). The engine is the most successful motorsport engine that Porsche have ever built and is probably one of the best engines ever to find their way into a road car. Although the official red line on the road cars is approximately 8,000 rpm, these engines have been known to suffer over revs of over 12,000 rpm without major damage such is the strength of the bottom end. That is why your car is so special and why it's increasing in value. There is nothing in the market that can offer anything like this power plant - including the current GT3 range.

DONT SELL IT!

Thanks all - its awesome to read your comments!!!

Ranman - you have what i wish for - damm you!!!

barchetta_boy - Gen2 997s seem still beyond the budget and i think id be cautious about a gen 1 (although maybe i should cool off a bit as my 987s was no bother and i loved it). love the c63 - think i would go m3 as i just prefer the styling of bmws

Steve - thanks for the feel good vibes! the engine and its history is the core of the specialness for me and your note is a great reminder of that. A piece of history! I was at le mans this year and it felt great that my car had heritage there. Keeping it is definitely the smartest financial choice (unless i could hop onto another marque that was about to appreciate too?)

Mark - i have the 100cell speed tech exhaust and its plenty, PLENTY fast enough for me!!!!

Thanks all.

Have to say that I spent an hour looking at gran turismo vids and reviews last night though and it is very tempting.
Specialness - tick
Engine noise - tick
family ready - tick
Performance - sounds a bit heavy, but i liked my 540 and 5.2 secs can't be too bad (and i like the idea of wringing it to get there)
depreciation - ???????

Any MGT owners out there that have a view on the idea of making the jump?

I sold my Turbo & replaced it with an M3 CSL .. dont regret the decision at all.

Turbo was a great car, but I never really bonded with it & in all honesty it was a bit boring to drive quickly ( bear in mind I find most enjoyment from the aircooled cars )

hot 66 - id do the same!!! good for you. If only this thread was 3 years ago though - i saw a CSL up at +£80k the other day! Don't think the CS is special enough (although maybe one with the airbag could get 90% of the way there?)

I was in a similar situation about 18 month ago and the above happened to me.

I Went and looked at M3's, C63 Saloon and Coupes. RS4's. All the salesmen loved the Turbo and when I showed them the invoice / service history every single one of them, very honestly in fairness to them, asked why I wanted to sell it.

They all walked round it grining, admiring it. It was an extremely proud day biggrin

Shortly after that the prices started to creep up, so I'm quite happy I kept it.

Very similar position to the op for me . In my case the children don't want to go in my coupe so I end up driving it myself which has become very infrequently as I'm normally ferrying the children around . Think I've managed 8000 miles in 6 years ...very poor really
I tested an 2004 Vanquish in April this year which I liked but when I drove the Turbo back from the dealer 60 miles away I enjoyed the trip home so much that the of thought spending twice as much as the Turbo for a significantly less capable and undoubtedly more highly strung car seemed daft ( but probably a better longterm investment ..)
Now I think I should sell the Turbo and buy an F10 m5 which the family would go out in ..and lose a ton of money on depreciation in the process

Sometimes I hate cars

What about keeping the 996tt and doing a 5k car as a runabout? At this price, if you buy wisely and don't hold on to them too long you could scratch the itch on cars that you would like to try, an Audi A8, fiat panda sport, golf gti. It has kept the bug from me but I enjoy my little panda to much to change it.

Sell while the going is good.

The 997.1 with the mezger is a much better buy, more modern car.

These will knock the 996T peaked prices down.
