I've owned a 996 myself and have driven his loads and I only ever come away with one thought: Brilliant, not sure what more you could want from a sports car really (I love my 993 but although more characterful it feels dead clunky in comparison, hard to believe the 996 is only one gen newer). Anyway, 300bhp, great handling and ride, fab engine sound esp inside the cabin, fab exhaust sound from the cheap as chips carnewal silencer, 100k mile interior hardly worn, interior also retro modern now. Told him again that I've got first dibs on it if he ever sells it, unfortunately for me i think he may be in for the long haul!

After all the negative things you read about the 996 you almost get a false perception of the car don't you, then you go in one or drive one and boom, you realise what a great sports car they are, I'm really pleased with my 996, and your right about the interior being a bit retro cool now, even better with the Porsche/Becker single din head unit instead of the old nav system.

Its a very long time since I drove a 996, I thought it too quiet and normal. I was a hater.

But, I would love to try one again, I think maybe as times have changed and cars have become more detached that maybe theres a different perspective now?

They definitely look better, I might even say, timeless?

Seem to remember EVO rating it over the 993 and 3.2 Carrera.

I love my carrera 4. Looks good; distinctive, but still 911. Drives well; fast, fun, safe and bags of character. I think as people start to buy them as classics, rather than the cheapest 911 they can afford, their strengths and retro but very livable features will be appreciated more and more.

Agree with the above. I've recently joined the 911 world after Chimaera and Cerbera ownership. Whilst I love my TVR's I think the 996 I have is absolutely fantastic (and a classic by now surely!)

996 C2 will go down as one of the best sports cars ever made. They're fantastic. Fill your boots

Agree, they do need PSE or a good aftermarket item to my ear to be fair, although i appreciate others like it more subtle.

Had mine for 6yrs before I had a Cargraphic fitted & realised this - has transformed the car!

Nice to read something positive about them, keep thinking about changing mine, but for what?

I was blown away by how good the 996 was the first time I drive one shortly after launch. Made all my air cooled cars - and there have been a few - feel very old.
But the looks left me cold. And still do.

They're not he best looking car for me either, but stick a GT3 front bumper on a 996.1 and the improvement is vast for me. Even prefer the early lights to the facelift lights now by a long way! How times change smile

This is one of the things which has brought me round after ignoring them for so long, I've never driven one (or any 911 come to that), but I really do want to try one now. A few weeks back I nipped over to see a mate in Cov who has three Porsche specialists very close by, we had a shuftie at one of them who had a very tidy looking 996 parked outside in silver with a red interior, despite being at least fifteen years old it looked the business. We both walked round it, looking at it from all angles and nothing seemed out of place or overdone, the headlights aren't to everyone's liking but they didn't look so bad in the flesh.

It's that shape, the simple detailing and the way the car sits on the ground that does it for me - it still 'works' somehow. Man maths and domestic giggery-pokery are now coming into play...!

I like the way the Gen 1 harks back to the late '60s / early '70s base model 911s in its simplicity...

Cmoose....a bit of 996.2 self indulgent rocking horse poo for you. Only in my ownership for 3 months but it has never once failed to entertain and put a smile on my face (PSE may have something to do with that). What on earth car wise represents the same value for money?

More pictures. Had mine for nine years from new and no problems. Swapped in for a 997. Interior was my choice, not everyone liked it.
