Here's mine. I've owned the car for just over three months. I've driven over 5000 miles in that time, and enjoyed every mile. What a machine! I'm just a little annoyed with myself for leaving it so long before trying one. I wish I'd bought one years ago.

I think the 996 is starting to age really well, and a true bargain performance motor.

Was it the turbo you bought? If so it may be the one I was going to take a look at before the sales guy phoned and said he had sold it.

Had mine done at Unit 11 in Warrington. They used to look after my 964 & know their way around 911s.

Will try & dig out the settings used, but was a touch more aggressive at the rear but mainly about reducing understeer by making the front end 'pointier' with 1 degree of negative camber on each side.

Doesn't tramline really but is sharper to turn in & I love the feel through the wheel!
Thanks for the reply, I'd appreciate it if you could dig out the printout, would be interesting to see.

I have to take credit for preventing a friend from selling his 60k 996.1 silver/black C2 to a dealer last January for 9k GBP.

Shame there is so much wrong in the article, but yes the 996 is better than the 993 in those measurable ways.

But the 'writer' needs to go back to his day job as he chose to open the article with a real shocker about sitting in a traffic jam being a 'truly nerve-wracking experience' in a 993.

As it was designed to cope with middle-eastern ambient temperatures, why would a traffic-jam cause any issues?

Bizarre.

Agreed, never had any overheating issues with my 2 964s in UK summers in traffic. In fact, it's the first I've ever heard about it being an issue tbh.

I love mine to bits, M030 suspension, cup manifolds, exhausts and hi-flow cats , revo remap and loads of other bits and bobs. Perfect car for every situation and my daily driver.. Can't honestly think of anything i'd replace it with other than a turbo smile

Sorry but the only picture I have

So the ergonomics of a 996 are better than a 993 and its much more modern engine revs better....cmon guys...they must be desperate for content.

I really like my 996 and bought it because it was way cheaper than a 993. But all things being equal, I'd have a 993 like a shot.

I have a screensaver issued by Porsche in 1998. It shows the evolution of the 911 with changing body shapes over time. The basic shape is unchanged up to the 993 and then it lengthens as it morphs to the 996. The 996/986 platform was clean sheet...one would expect the shortcomings of the 34 year old 911 platform to have been addressed!!

But the REAL reason why the 996 is a better everyday car than its predecessors is that the rust proofing is light years ahead. They really are protected very well indeed.

All things being equal, I'd still have a 996.

Way more room inside, way more modern ride/handling, PSM to save you if you're caught out, nicer cockpit, less chance of tin-worm, loads of things.

Being less than half-price is a bonus; no "mileage anxiety" and plenty of cash for mods/upgrades.

I must be in the minority, looked at a couple of 993's before eventually buying my 996, just don't get ithem. They aren't the classic 911 shape yet they're not a modern 911, worst of both worlds to me but appreciate to the beards they're the best thing since, well, pretty much anything really.

Indeed, quite correct. Only the wings and PU's are different.

However, the new manufacturing techniques were born during the 993's life. Kaizen and Sigma processes from Nissan were introduced and by the end of its life, the 993 was built in a way that the 996/986 would take to an extreme level. These were in fact good things.

But in terms of design and engineering it is the last evolution of the car introduced in 1963. It is hopelessly over engineered and cost far too much to produce.

Nice. I love the subtler aerokit spoiler on the 996.

I like the Carrera fixed spoiler in that pic. Yet when i look at my own i'm at best 50:50 on it.

993's are another odd one for me. Again i'll see a picture and sometimes think it looks like someone look an aircooled 911 and tried to make it look modern (withouth grweat success). Then i'll see another pic and think it's the best looking 911 generation. They are my second fav to the 996 but this is a preference almost entirely driven by my age relative to when the car launched.

In terms of evolution is the 964 not a very important departure from the cars that came before it? Importantly different under the very familiar looking skin when it comes to suspension etc?

The 964 was the first 911 to drop the torsion bar suspension for coils while also introducing ABS, PAS and more modern HVAC systems. It is/was also the most aerodynamic 911 that has been built. Porsche then came over all boring and went NVH crazy, deciding to dull the senses by adding rubber and multi links to its suspension in the 993smile
