Just a thought. I own a 996 turbo and loads of the yanks over in 6speed and rennlist disconnect the front drive shaft, diff and axles. Thus making it RWD. Can the same not be done on a C4? That would open up your search by double or so.

I am looking into swapping the wheels for my 996 and for me the single most important factor is the weight. I've very interested to hear your feedback regarding this as you mention above you noticed the way it drives. Could you be more detailed wink
There are a few options for wheels and the Fuch's were just not aesthetically doing anything thing for me (don't get me wrong, I love them on the AC cars). The most likely contender for me right now are the Oz Allegrerita's as they are lighter again than the Fuch's (around 0.7kg per rim), trouble is the Fuch's have the Porsche heritage so I'm struggling to find a clear winner in my head confused
I would argue that OZ have more direct motorsport connections/lineage/influences than Fuchs... wink
Or Volk/Rays (overnight parts from Japan only way wink )

Thanks for your input guys, I am fully aware of the Oz racing heritage just not that there is a Porsche connection like say the Fuchs, Speedlines, BBS..
The other issue with the Fuchs is the ET's are a bit weak. I have also considered the Volks, TE37SL's to be more precise, as they are designed for Porsche, but there is still the JDM thing going on with them and I'm not sure if that suits Porsche...

Not sure why you'd just disconnect the front driveshaft. After all, you've still got all the diff and axles, and so the added weight. A C4 still feels like a rear drive car, but is more sure footed out of corners, especially when damp, great fun to exploit once you've sussed out the cornering technique. Loads of great 996's out there, and plenty of quality indy's with the experience to make them better than stock. The 996 has a great future, get in now before everyone realises it.

They remove the drive shaft, diff and axles.

I've been saying this since about 2009 hehe As an aside, there's got to be about ~50kg of weight gone now this is all removed

This with some of the work Richie has been doing would be the ideal 996 for me, possibly even the ifeal 911 full stop (did I just say that?!).

Well the good news is it still means you can do a Richie car without having to limit yourself to C2 in the classifieds when looking for a donor. If I haven't lost my bottle after our house move in a few months (hopefully) a -10% weight and +10% bhp with tasty suspension and a few other bits is def on the cards I reckon. Love the idea of a properly sorted 911 for relative peanuts that is good on the road as well as track, would make an ace track stable mate for my 620R. Lighter than a GT3 but with sensible power and gearing has got to be a winner and the time to do it is now before 996s go the way of 964s etc

Hi All,

I just purchased a 996.1 C2 to add to the Turbo S in the stable.

It is a beautifully balanced car with direct and responsive steering and throttle.....amazing little cars, which are genuinely looking cool now and very under-estimated!!

Ok, I'll play.

I just bought this 3.4 C2 manual for the daily commute. Love it so far...

This is an interesting topic and one that's pretty well-timed. My OH bought a 996.2 C2 cab about 5 years ago, and has used it as her daily ever since. Aside from a few small niggles here and there it has been an excellent car, recently ticking over 120k miles.

We're sort of getting to the point of thinking about moving it on, but she's reluctant to put much more money into a new(er) car so the budget would very much depend on what the 996 is worth. Given the mileage, roof (ragtop) and gearbox (tiptronic) I'm sort of estimating that's around £13-14k, but as prices seem to have bottomed out and are slowly on the rise she may end up keeping it for longer.

I drive it semi regularly, and every time I do I'm reminded of how good it is to drive still. Certainly wears the miles well, and once you learn its foibles the tiptronic's not too bad a 'box. Given that anything that's available for similar money will likely be nowhere near as 'special' as a 911 (even a shopping derivative like this one) it's more and more tempting to hang onto it. I also suspect that the resurgence in interest in 996s will pass this one by a little, as it's not a manual, hardtop 996.1 frown

With the best will in the world, those numbers are rather optimistic for a private sale I'd say. I'd be thinking at least £2K less than that. But if you enjoy it and are going to keep it, it doesn't matter smile

Fair enough! It's going into Northway in a couple of weeks for MOT and service, so I'll have a natter with them about it's general health. I suspect I already know the answer though.

Besides, I definitely haven't had enough time to enjoy the recent Dansk back-boxes hehe

I often wonder if this pursuit for coupe and manual etc is just an issue on this forum.

Probably wrong , usually am drunk

I can't comment on the difference between C2 & C4 as I have recently acquired a '99 C4 and have never driven the rwd only version. I can say, however, that I am very impressed so far with mine, particularly on roundabouts where I was expecting to see the rear end passing my left ear if I pushed it a little !! but it sticks to the road like glue and goes around like it's on rails. Some may want a more seat-of-the -pants experience, but doing things safely ticks my box. Either way these cars are superb driving machines, good luck with the search.

The 996 is massively under-rated... well the cooking version is. GT3 prices have gone crazy and I honestly believe the regular car probably makes a more sensible road car. I did drive several GT3s.... in case anyone's wondering.

The only advice I tend to give is DO NOT buy a low mileage one. The IMS issues seemed to be exacerbated by low miles, gentle use. Big problems *usually* manifested themselves before 50K.

Here's a couple of piccies of mine. Took it around Europe. Great car. It was featured in a 911 magazine, they called it a "wonderful example of how great a basic RWD carrera can be". When I told them it was a C4 they oddly never answered...

stunning! I love a yellow 996.1 with aero. Here's my zenith blue 996.1, c2 manual with aero cup kit. Bought it last year and love it. Currently using it to commuting down some great country lanes every day. Slightly greasy country roads and this car make for an entertaining drive! Have some gt3 split rims waiting a refurb to complete the look....
