Two other cars to consider:

The Bentley Continental, the new DB11 or indeed a Ferrari California.

Not sure how good a Bentley Continental would be on track as i'm sure it would get through consumables at quite a rate. Nice for the long drives but as Sporty as a Parker Knoll Recliner.

When's the DB11 due for launch?

It sounds like the porker is a good bet for you, considering the need for 4 seats, a bit of track action and something new.

The FF seems like a good alternative if they are affordable. I should think that the servicing would be about the same as the Turbo S?

It doesn't have 2 seats but the Merc SLS would be up there for me. Fun, pretty and that noise cloud9

There is also a hell of a lot of nice older stuff at £150k if you like Ferraris. A 599 or a 550 would be a lot of fun.

Lots of good suggestions, but if you've always promised yourself a Turbo S then surely that's what you're going to get?
Having said that, the rumoured 2+2 version of the McLaren 570S would be a much more of an 'event' and not 'just' the top of the range 911...

Wouldn't be any good for the track work but the FF on every other measure has to be taken bloody seriously. There are plenty of people that seem to successfully use them as daily drivers and owners speak very, very highly of them.

I don't know how tall the OP and Mrs OP are and how many kids they have but I was seriously considering a 991 GTS but came to the conclusion that for me it was at best a three seater even for occasional use...I am 6'2" and admittedly tend to like my driving position "relaxed" but my 5yr old wouldn't have been very happy behind me at all and my 7 yr old simply didn't fit.

It's not as batst mental quick as the Turbo S but then the Turbo S doesn't have the sensory overload of a Ferrari V12!

I know it's not a trackday car. But it has all the comfort, luxury, presence, room and speed on public roads you need.

Totally agree, however as the Turbo S is now priced squarely in Supercar territory i had one of those opposite to Man maths moments where it dawned on me this purchase would be double any previous car purchase i've made & thus before signing any paperwork it would be remiss of me not to check out the competition at this price point.

Wasn't aware a 2+2 570S was in the pipeline, any idea on potential launch dates?

Although a stunning motor, i chose my F10 M5 over the E63 (albeit the Saloon) in 2014 & other than a nice note, it wouldn't offer anything over the car i've got now.

OP is 6ft & Mrs OP 5ft 9. The rear seating really would only be used on the rarest of occasions & even then it would likely be the youngest (2yrs old) in his Isofix carseat & he'd go behind his Mum. The priorities are the ability to be a daily driver, make me want to take the car out just for the hell of it, schleps onto the Continent & probably 4-5 UK trackways & a couple of days hooning round Spa/Zolder. Basically a step up from the BMW M's & Audi RS's so something that's out & out Sports car but as said initially the 911 Turbo was a car i've lusted after since childhood & i think is possibly the only car that can tick the boxes & provide relief for the long established itch.

Apparently sometime in the first half of 2016.... here is an article: http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/spy-shots/mclaren/mcl...

also, I know its a little bit different, but how about a BMW M6? Huge engine, and it has back seats... and a big boot!

Had a 911 Turbo.... was too fast for the roads in the UK i reckon, and i really struggled with it as there was no noise that i was expecting to hear - sounded like a big 'whooosh' when it kicked in.

Chasing my mate in his 458 through belgium, with another mate losing us in his M3 will be in the memory banks for a while.

Re servicing in the FF - wasnt that one of those that came with the service package as standard?

How often will you use the rear seats?

I think I did twice in 4 years of owning a 997. Both did not receive compliments from the rear passengers :-).

I'd consider (but probably still go 991 TS):

Alfa Romeo 8C
Aston DBS / DB9
BMW i8
Chevrolet Corvette Z06
Ferrari (any) :-)
Lamborghini (any!)
Mercedes SLS / AMG GT
Porsche 991 GTS (Chris Harris has one)

Odd ball choice - RR Phantom Drophead?! Only because Bentley was mentioned :-)

If I was going to be spending around £150k on a 911 then I would want something a bit different to the standard factory product.

You might want to have a word with RUF about their 911 Targa Florio Turbo...

It comes with 620bhp and you can choose either two or four wheel drive and also the option of an auto or manual gearbox and you can drop the targa roof when the sun comes out smile

I can't afford a 991 Turbo S, but if I could I'd buy a different second hand car. I've never bought a new car. I went to Reading a few weeks ago to check out the 991 Turbo S: it's a brilliant machine, just not 5 times the price of my '04 996 Turbo. My car felt like an old friend when I got back to the car park and I like the looks. It felt good to drive home in, and this was seriously reassuring - I thought I might think it was rubbish after the 991. Sure, the new one is much faster and dynamically more able, but it lacked charm. For my £150K or thereabouts I'd go for a 997 GT3 RS or a 996 GT3 RS. A manual 599; a decent 550 and lots left to fettle it; a leggy F12...
New car wise the little McLaren seems like a lovely thing.

Finally, for those who are apparently rich enough not to worry about depreciation, gear up (if you need to) and buy a high mileage Carrera GT, it will cost you the same all in over the next 3 years and be on another planet in every sense.

PS Apologies for the 2 seat choices. Got a bit excited. Stick to the A6 and then something else fun...

Now that's a good shout! My vote would go to a 2-car garage, Tesla for bonkers acceleration and Caterham 620S for enjoyment / track. Both quicker in their respective environs that a turbo-S.

It might not be sports car enough but what about the new AMG S 63 coupe?

If you've always had your heart set on a 911 turbo or Turbo S go for one, you will only be disappointed if you don't. Believe me I speak from experience.

I wanted a 911 Turbo from a very young age. Somehow I managed to avoid scratching the itch for many years - I've had some very nice and very quick cars but the Porsche remained unticked on my bucket list. Eventually I succumbed and got a 997 Turbo. I ran it for a year with a Bentley Conti GT V8 as a second car. The Bentley underwhelmed me massively so it made the Porsche seem that much better and I loved it. Then I sold both cars and bought a 991 Turbo S which was my daily driver. In the right circumstances it is a mental car and huge fun. The big problem for me was that the right circumstances were so few and far between that it became frustrating. The car really only comes alive over 100mph which isn't particularly practical in the UK. Also, I found the throttle lag at low revs to be quite irritating, and I preferred the hydraulic steering of the 997. 4 months into ownership I also bought a C7 RS6 and I realised there was a problem when the Porsche spent most of its time unused. Much as I didn't want to admit it, my dream car had become boring. I sold it a few months later and didn't miss it.

However, I am very glad I got it out of my system otherwise it would still be there as an unfulfilled dream, and the same will happen to you if you go for another car. I also used both Porsches to ferry my 3 year old daughter around many times and apart from the pain of strapping her into the seat, they fulfilled that task very comfortably.
