Wondering if PH has the answer to this conundrum...

Bought a used car, all looked ok and I left with a V5C/2 document with my name on it.

I've gone to tax it online but the have received an error message. Further investigation would suggest that reason for this is thatthe document the V5C/2 was attached to wasn't the most up-to-date.

The document I have is 2010, having checked there appears to have been a further one issued in 2012. The owner acquired the vehicle in 2010, and the number of previous keepers shown was correct on the V5 and latest check, so I know that the 2012 V5 was issued to the same owner.

The seller says they do not have this newer document.

My questions are:

1) Will the DVLA reject the transfer when the V5C I signed is received, as it is not the latest one?
2) Will I be able to tax the vehicle at a post office? If not, worst case scenario is that it takes 2+ weeks for the DVLA to reject issue of the new V5C, I have to reapply for one in my own name and it then takes a further 6 weeks to issue this leaving me without the car being useable for 8 weeks or so banghead

V62, lost/destroyed log book. You can apply for a new log book and tax it at the post office using this form. All should be ok.

Thanks for quick response,

Just looked at the V62 form info, sounds all well and good other than this part:

If you are not the registered keeper of the vehicle you may not be able
to tax until you get a V5C in your name.

In which case I'll be in the situation of not being able to tax for up to 6 weeks frown

Probably be OK. The worst that'll happen is that you'll need to do it on a V62, with your £25. You can tax it at the PO at the same time as submitting that.

I've just had a new V5C through in my name for a recent purchase in a week from the seller sending it in - so there's no huge delays at the mo,

Thanks, that's good news.

Hopefully DVLA just issue in that case then, as the seller is the same on old and new docs, should be clear there's no foul play and just a bit of an admin fk up!

The worst that can happen is that the Logbook Loan company pays you a little visit, but hopefully the previous owner just got the new V5, said, I've got one of those, and promptly lost it.

Hopefully not, but it's 16 years old and I only paid £2k for it... can't imagine anyone would lend much against it!

Take the V5C to a post office - they can tax it.

I had a similar issue on a car I purchased last year. I brought it privately mid march, but had no intention of using it until the beginning of April (The car was delivered to me my the previous owner - I brought it from <3 miles from home).

When I purchased I tried to tax it online to start in April, this would not work and would only allow backdate to 1st March - no problem, its off the road so I'd tax it in April. On the 1st April I tried to to it using the V5c, but it wouldn't do it online because a new V5 had been issued and the V5C was now invalid.

I called the DVLA helpline who told me I had 2 options......
1) Wait for the V5 to arrive (upto 28 days)
2) Go to a post office who can do it as they use the old DVLA computer system

I went to a local post office and taxed it there and then with just the V5c. Typically the V5 in my name dropped through the letter box the next day!

Interesting that they're still on the old system - clearly the new one is a downgrade.

Am I reading that right as in you had the full V5C doc or just the V5C/2?

That said, it did prompt me to

1) Double check my HPI report (proper one from HPI, not the £3 text check jobby!)
2) Google the V5 situation - apparently a load were lost once upon a time, and they were all reissued in 2012 in the new format, so may well be that the latest one was binned unwittingly...

I just had the new keeper bit. Not the full v5

Thanks for the responses all.

An update for anyone stumbling across this thread in the same situation - despite the V5C document not being the most recent, I went to the post office with the V5C/2, the gentleman on the counter scanned it and I taxed the car no problemo.

Moral of this story is... do things the old fashioned way. It works.
