Is the 3.6 really more reliable than the 3.8 or is it simply there are less examples out there to fail? Is IMS failure still a concern at this age? Can child/baby seats be fitted in the rear allowing any room to be left up front?

At not a whole heap of beans more than a decent low mileage 996 carrera & two thirds of the price of a generation two car, dare I say they look appealing value for money if nothing else?

Any advice great fully appreciated smile

Have you had a look at the Hartech website for a bit of info?

Can't comment much on the 3.6 vs 3.8 reliability etc but there's heaps of stuff out there to read up on that. As for the car seat question I use this in my 997.1

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...

It fits great in the back and even better if you remove the bottom bit of the seat in the car (it's only held in with Velcro). The rear of the seat (bit that folds down) can be removed too by unscrewing two bolts but I haven't done this yet as my daughter who's about 1 metre tall fits in without any issues of front passenger room.

Yes I've seen a few child seats that fit however a baby carrier is what's needed first and I think they're quite a bit bulkier.

I wonder if there's isofix anchors on the front seats?

Regarding the baby/child seat. I have two children coming upto 2 & 4 years old and its fine for them in the back. There are a number of car seats that fit in the back, we have a halford essentials 123 as the spare seat (really cheap and seems ok) and a cyber pallas m-fix which is isofix (for are other car where it usually is) but goes in non isofix fine so works well for the 997.

I don't think there is a baby carrying system (i.e. rear facing) that fits properly from the research i did.

I am also not sure if there was ever isofix in the 997 front available, remember the airbag needs to be deactivated when its in use so not sure if Porsche did that.

I want aware of any isofix options personally but I found the above photo on a link from another web page about the 997.1 -no idea if it was even an option in the uk but it must have been somewhere.

My 2006 C2S has ISOFIX hoops in the front passenger seat, factory fit, UK car.

My view is the cost of potential engine issues is effectively priced in vs 997.2 Yes its a lot of car for the money, if you don't have expensive problems. There are plenty of threads with views on the chances of that occurring.

In the end I went for a 996 C4S, which is similar in value/engine concerns, but I hope longer term will hold value, rarer than 997 (the most prolific 911 edition) and second only in 996 desirability to the turbo.

I think you are probably right with the engine issues priced into the 997.1 but I think in time the 997.1 will be the winner, non LED headlights will be desirable just as early amber ones are now and more of a older engine type feel with most of the engine issues sorted by then. Also i wouod imagine a fair few 997.1 will die with the engine issues and just because they dont wear that well in the wrong hands.

Surely a 997 non s would be in the same risk camp as a 996 c4s. I also agree though 996 c4s will hold value well as people just seem to love the look.

Not that I'm an expert on the m96/97 engines but I figured the 3.6 was the same across both models.
