I have it mind that up to about march 2000 the 3.4 engine had dual a row IMS bearing and a tougher piston coating. Still fallible I know, and not the only worries either. But is there a way of finding out what a car first registered at about this time actually had in the engine when new ?

I bought a 2001 3.4 recently. During my search, like you I really wanted an 'early' one (98/99MY) also but just couldn't find one with the right specs and with comprehensive history.

The more I read the more I believe the whole IMS/bore scoring business remains a lottery even for the 3.4 cars. I figured it's best to buy one with the best history/condition, then change the IMS when the clutch is shot, and roll the dice on bore scoring!

Change over to single row IMS came after engine number # 661 14164

Hence the link to the thread. The Hartech info covers lots of different parts but for IMS the engine number is as good an indication as any I have come across.

As a rule of thumb I would agree but if an early car has at some time had a replacement engine it could also have a single row bearing, so checking engine numbers is a wise move. Replacement engines have an X suffix iirc.

Thanks all, what I though really - no way to be sure with the 2000 registrations. The car with the green interior (which I dislike) has apparently had a recent clutch and IMS bearing replacement which perhaps goes some way to justifying the price? but I have not viewed it.

Another `dead cert` is this one, which I think is very pretty.

But £20k? hmmm. I dont think its for me at that price!

I am not even convinced the lower mile cars are any safer anyway. Leaning towards the 75-85k mile bracket with good history. A fair proportion of the 2000/2001 cars I have enquired about have had either new heads or a complete new engine under warranty, some as recently as 2008. If I can find one at the right price which has been well cared for I don`t think its worth being too hung up about it not being `pre 2000`.

Every car is different and should be taken on their numerous merits or otherwise. As you know, many have had engine work and/or replacement engines anyway.

Ultimately, a car with a Hartech built engine is the best bet, but keep your options and your eyes open.

I think it's the direction things are heading. The "£10k" 996 is now a myth unless you want a leggy, tatty car. A 34k mile c2 sold at auction recently for £16.5k, Cardiff opc sold a similar spec car for £18k and there are the two cars above.

When I was looking last year, a 996 was about double a 986s like for like.

Depends what you want, you can still get a cheap 996 C2 but going to be high mileage and may need a few grand spending on it,
I spent a good chunk for a 996 on this recently, 1999 C2 53k, however I thought it worth it for the low mileage, rare factory paint colour and aerokit, along with condition. Prices of these early 996.1's are firming up and are being bought up quickly at the moment by quite a few enthusiasts over on 911uk.
It will be interesting to see what happens with the 20k car.

I saw the advert of you car on a Saturday, called the seller and arranged a viewing for Monday, but on Sunday I was told that it had been sold. (Congratulations by the way, love the colour)

So yes, good ones do sell very quickly!

It was on my doorstep almost and guessed it would sell quick. Went to look at it on the Sunday morning, seller mentioned he had already arranged for someone to look at it the following morning, I knew it wasn't cheap but also knew it was rare so deposit was left. Did you find another one??

I was supposed to work in that area on Monday so I said to the seller I would go and see the car in the morning. But then he texted me on Sunday afternoon informing me that it had been sold.

I notice that you have removed the 'GT3' badge. smile

Yes bought one, 2001 C2 with Aerokit and M030 in Artic Silver; would prefer more vibrant colour such as yellow, Zanzibar, white, vesuvius but they are rare; though I do like silver. Not picked up the car yet, can't wait!

Ditto.

I looked at several at £10-£15k and was disappointed. In the end I spent considerably more for my ideal spec:

M030, aerokit, sports exhaust, sports seats and manual.
As a bonus it has 44k miles, some oem aluminium interior trim, full leather and looks good in seal grey.

Picture for the seal grey please!

Not a common colour with an aerokit car.

My car is too at the top end of the price bracket for 996.1, but like you I was quite particular regarding specs (aerokit, C2, manual, M030, sport seat & black interior preferred). Would love one with sunroof delete and LSD but they are very rare. If one was to discount C4, tiptronic, cabriolet & tagra, there aren't many to choose from especially aerokit cars.

It's a c4. I originally sought a c2 but then drove a c4 and liked it. I figure the 4wd system lasts longer than a lsd and delivers different benefits. Sport pack lsd cars are very rare. Of course as soon as I'd bought mine a sport pack c2 with lsd appeared, but in practice given my road usage and requirement for unmolested originality I'm very pleased. All I compromised on was the interior colour of metropole blue, and that's really grown on me.

Best wheel & colour combo on a 996 wink

I passed on a Silver C2 with M030 & LSD as I wanted a non sunroof Seal Grey one with the 18" GT3 style alloys. Wasn't overly bothered about a lack of PSE as I have since had a Cargraphic fitted that sounds as good & I'm told is lighter.

Mine has grey leather which I personally think lifts the interior but appreciate a lot of people prefer boring black hehe
