Basically my Mac mini is in the office, which has all my Music and films on.

I would like to be able to play them on my Smart tv in the lounge which is connected to my sound system.

The Tv is a almost new Sony Smart Tv, the Android one.

Both Tv and Mac mini are connected to virgin hub.

Is this possible? If so how?

Cheers.

Apple TV will do it as mentioned. If it was for just music would suggest an airport express instead of apple TV.

You would need an Apple iPod/pad/phone to control an airport express using the Remote app - I've not used an Apple TV so not sure if you still need the remote app to play music from a Mac Mini or whether it can be controlled from the Apple TV itself.

Ok thanks guys, will get (another) Apple TV then.
I used to have one, gave it away as I never used it!

Wasn't sure if I could do it directly from the tv, it will connect to a media server (what ever that is)?

If you can get a media server running on the Mac, and a compatible app running on the TV, you shouldn't need any extra hardware. Try using Plex as the media server?

Thanks, downloaded Plex to my Mac, and started it uploading my music collection.

Pressed the music icon on my Tv and it automatically picked up my Plex account!!

It works, however it's a little slow and cumbersome to use, so might get a Apple TV anyway.

I just use my Apple TV 3 to stream and media from my macbook laptop and it works pretty well. if your mac/macbook is switched on and connected to 'home sharing' with the apple tv, it gives you access to all your media on the computer on the tv.

you can either use the apple tv remote or the 'remote' app on ipad/iphone, and scroll through all you photos, music, poscasts, films that are stored on the computer. I used to just play music through the tv and have my photos come up as a screen saver on the screen instead of watching tv!

Well i picked up the new Apple TV (32GB) this morning, have had a good play with it, and am Very impressed.

This is what Sony should have incorporated into there TV rather than that android crap. I think my Smart TV has just become a Monitor, other than for amazon prime.

Very easy to use, easy to access music etc, picture quality of films streamed from iTunes rental is simply outstanding quality!!

Picture quality of live TV from Iplayer is also much better quality, however not HD quality really (but watchable) I don't suppose there is a way to stream the HD channels?
Catch up is much better quality.

The remote is very easy to use (have also tried the remote on my iPhone which also works very well.

Well worth £130 in my view smile

IPlayer has a picture quality option in the settings, it defaults to standard def.

That would explain it, however I can't find this option?
