Having some difficulties with my Mac & need some guidance as to what might be the issue. I have had it previously but then it seemed to have gone away but now it has re-occured, well yesterday.

I was using my mac & the battery had dropped to 0:09mins left & got the pop up to say on reserve. In the time I went to go get my charger the mac had died, or so I thought. I plugged in the magsafe charger & tried to turn on the mac but nothing.

The light on the charger stayed a solid green & the mac was making a clunky noise like it was trying to start but couldn't & the sleep light on the front wasn't acting like normal, it was on but then would go off with the clunk.

The mac is a 2011 model & on OS 10.6.8

I left it alone for a day & have now managed to get it going again however when I started it the date & time were reset to 00:00:00 & the wifi password was also forgotten, other than that the rest all appears as it was previously.

I had performed an SMC reset about a week prior as when I was trying to charge the laptop before the battery wasn't charging kept saying calculating but the SMC fixed it.

From what I have read it could be logic board, battery or RAM, there isn't a genius store close to me so I am trying to see if I can resolve myself especially since it is well out of warranty & will cost me to fix.

I have ran Apple Hardware Test, both normal & extended, both come back with no issues, so a little stuck as to what it may be.

I did look into this: http://www.apple.com/uk/support/macbookpro-videois...

but I haven't had any video issues nor it restarting itself, it just crashes & stays like that for a day or so.

It sounds like the battery to me. I'd take it into a local independent shop and see what they say. With it been 5 years old, I probably wouldn't go to Apple as they'll just charge top whack for what could be just a 10 minute battery swap.

Any clunky noises on a computer and I'd start worrying about the hard drive (no SSD on a 2011 MBP, I'd guess?).

Make sure your backups are up to date RIGHT NOW!

I did this with my old black plastic Macbook, left it to drain on standby. Had similar start up problems, had killed the battery. Fortunately, they where easily replaced! However I agree, clunking noises, could be HDD on it's way...get it back up!

I have a feeling it is the battery too as it is draining much much quicker than it used to. Has dropped from 40 - 38 - 29 in the space of typing this message & all I have done is flick in between a few tabs

If it's the logic board, it's a free repair even when out of warranty. Only until 27th Feb 2016 though.
I had mine replaced a few months ago for nowt instead of nearly £400.

I'd book an appointment and get it checked before the time runs out.

Got a backup running as we speak

Spoke to Applecare they suggested updating to the latest OS, but it definitely doesn't sound like a software issue. Bit apprehensive about OS update though, don't like the whole privacy updates

Got an appointment with genius bar so will take it in on friday & push for a repair/fix.
