Looks like mine are getting worse, used to take a few minutes of idling to get smoke - but after 8k miles it's now smoking after much shorter periods of idling.

You can get the following tool for ~£600 which allows you to change them in-situ:
http://www.agatools.com/tool/n62-valve-stem-seal-t...

Obviously I only need the tool once - so ideally I need to sell it afterwards to recoup some cost (any takers..)

Has anyone had it done by a garage and at what cost?

I phoned around a few places to get some costs. A few wouldn't take it on, but prices ranged from £1,300 up to £2,500.

Are you going to tackle it yourself?

I'm waiting for a price from my local indy - they said they wouldn't use that tool, rather take the heads off and do it that way.

I'd be interested to hear what they come back with, if you don't mind.

I feel your pain; my 645 is going into an Indy on Tuesday for them to quote me for this work frown sad to say it's got me thinking about changing the car.

When I bought my 645i I shopped around to get a rough idea of how much this job would be should my seals fail (touch wood they are fine).

I'm not sure where you are in the country but the cheapest I had was £1,400 at a Somerset BMW Indy (can PM you the name if you want) on the basis that they kept the car for a few weeks and worked on it as and when time became available. £2k seemed to be the average figure for standard turn around time, dread to think what main dealer would be?

20 hrs sounds a bit steep to me as its 10 hrs to do the top end gaskets and I can't see valve seals being 10 hrs on top of that.

I was booked in and ready go there this week, but work has been too busy to get away from, and with it being the best part of 200 miles away, it was essentially costing me two days (drop off and then collection a week later).

I'm still planning to go there, once things have calmed a little.

Mine aren't too bad at the moment, so it can wait.

I was also quoted around 20 hours elsewhere, using the AGA tool.

Well I got my quote today; garage cannot confirm that it is the valve seals so they want to strip the engine, inspect and replace anything that looks remotely worn and send the head to the machine shop. £5313.46 (inc labour) for what they foresee right now yikes

I'm 99% sure the issue is the valve stem seals so going to send the car to Technosport in north London for a second opinion/quote. Luckily mine has only just started smoking and it takes a long time to get it to that point, but I'd like this nipped sooner rather than later.

We could arrange a group discount at this rate!

Indeed. Particularly true given parts cost are negligible.

I'd be interested to know what Technosport quote you as I'm just round the corner from them and need the job doing. Rather than muck about with the AGA tool, seems prudent to do the job the old fashioned way and have gaskets and piston rings done at the same time for peace of mind.

But that means engine out... If you are going to split the rods, you want to change bearings too. You may as well change the chain guides etc. Btw, if the heads are off, you want to change the guides, not just the seals... You will not get much change from 5 to 6k

I think my wallet just collapsed into itself, creating a miniature black hole in my pocket.
