I have been flipping the last few weeks between BMW touring, saloon snd lately a Santa Fe. I have 3 kids and my A6 is grand but I like the idea of a bit more space. I know the BMW saloon would be similar but I looking at a 530d to compensate for the lack of space.. Anyhow I keep getting drawn back to the GT as there are plenty in the 15-20k bracket.. The Santa Fe is big money new but has a loooonnngg warranty and 7 seats. Any thoughts on the gt, m sport necessary or not???

Each to their own OP but every time I see a 5GT I cannot help but die a little inside. Not a good example of brand dilution. They are awful looking. As I've said that's only my opinion. What does it offer you a normal 5 wouldn't ?
I agree. If you need extra space why not go for an estate? Even more space than the GT and much better looking.

When I went to a BMW dealer to look at 5 series tourers I sat in a GT and was very impressed. The interior seemed a touch higher quality ( dash is closer to 7 series than 5) and the rear leg and headroom was much better which my lanky teenage daughter appreciated.
The boot was smaller than the tourer but more practical than the saloon as it has a boot lid and a hatchback.
I am still not keen on the exterior but it is growing on me and when I saw that it was possible to get a higher spec/ newer GT than a tourer for the same money I thought the GT seemed the better purchase.

I know I think I like the GT but I'm not convinced on the looks..on the other hand the 5 series touring looks fabulous in m sport guise and there are a few 530d m sports in the 15 to 20 k region, serously tempting.. I like the Santa de for its practicality but it's working out expensive new
I think they look great, in th right colour/wheel combo. This one is especially nice looking.

And what about the 3GT?
Got stuck behind a 318D version this morning - it seemed slower than my 1998 318is!!
Utter waste of space.
I overtook a Mercedes-McLaren SLR a few years ago in my 1982 316....doesn't mean my car is faster.Got stuck behind a 318D version this morning - it seemed slower than my 1998 318is!!

But yes, I suspect the 318is is actually quicker, but what's your point? Whilst a 318D GT would be one of the last things on my lists of cars to buy, your comment seems the utter waste of space, as you're seemingly suggesting that it's a waste of space because it was travelling slower than your 318is.
The car that was a waste of space would, I'm sure, be better suited to the needs of the owner than your E36 would to them. It has a better boot, a nicer interior, it's got a warranty, it's much more economical, cheaper to tax, likely cheaper to insure, far less likely to spend time at a garage getting broken bits mended etc etc.
From their point of view, your E36 may be an utter waste of space.
That's not my view, but you it's a bit blind to not see things from another perspective.

I had a ride in one that was cabbing (a 550) - seemed pretty uncomfortable and strangely low rent in the back.
An interesting experience. I have read a lot of negative comments about the looks and the heavy boot lid leading to a small boot. You are the first I have beard to comment on a poor ride, I wonder if it was an Msport with stupidly large wheels and run flats.jkh112 said:

I couldn't care less who, or what, is in front of me. It was simply because the 3GT appeared extremely sluggish & just looked, sort of, odd.
Haven't driven one so I might be proved wrong.
I have no doubt that it is more reliable than my 18 year old car as well as being better equipped, more economical etc etc & also I am not bothered about what other people think of my old 3 series.
