New neighbour has an old mini with some sort of custom exhaust.

I don't mind a bit of engine noise but am getting a bit tired of the house vibrating every time he starts it up and repeatedly revs the arse off it before pulling away, at idle it's not an issue at all.

Before I pop round and ask if he could be a bit more considerate can I ask you guys if there's a genuine need to pump the throttle on an old car like this? I've only owned modern vehicles so wouldn't know if there is a such a requirement.

Cheers

EDIT : title should say 'Classic', can't edit!

It'll have a manual choke so will be revving higher from a cold start when he's using the choke.

Also he's probably just giving it some revs to get it running properly. The A series engine was virtually unchanged from 1959 onwards!

Assuming it is an A series....could be a ....Honda VTEC....or summat.

It depends on the set up or he may have a problem from cold starts. My 1981 VW has a twin weber setup with no chokes. This means from cold I need to manually give it a few revs (and then manually hold the revs higher) at the beginning just to keep it running. I need to do this for five minutes before setting off.

However, mine is not too noisy or disturbing for my neighbours. (or at least they haven't been brave enough to ask me to be quiet yet smile )

Mike

Hmmm ok, glad I asked.

This is definitely driver throttle input, not just a higher rev idle on start up.

3 or 4 big stabs of throttle EVERY time he gets in, which is a lot as he's a young lad popping in and out all the time. Seems very nice though so I certainly don't want to be a dick about it, just suspect it's cause he thinks he's Steve McQueen unless you guys say otherwise. hehe

No reason at all if it's got an A series and if it's set up properly. No different to a newer car except you have to operate the choke yourself if it's one without electronic ignition.

No difference at all between a choke and electronic ignition? What about if it's got fuel injection instead of a distributor?

Is he giving it some revs till it starts to run on all cylinders?
Starting my XK150 it sometimes takes a bit of prompting to get them all running.
Of course it could just be that he like the noise it makes.
I've got an XKR and that has an annoying rev a bit feature built into the engine management system by some PFY in the marketing dept. Every time you start the engine it makes a noise just to tell the world it's there. irked

Putting a tttish exhaust on and blipping the throttle is a deliberate act, he doesn't give a fk anout those around him, why hesitate to confront?

If that's the case, he needs to get his spanners out. In my youth I owned several A series (and B series) engined-cars and never once had to do this with any of them.

Had both and wouldn't say there was much difference how noisy they were.

I'm sure if you explain it he'll be more considerate.

I felt guilty starting my Sunbeam in the garage particularly if it was early, it'd vibrate the house. The garage joined to my neighbours' so they'd get it as well. Fortunately I

a) didn't have to rev it.
b) didn't take it out too often.
c) Neighbours didn't mind too much.

He's a young lad, enjoys the noise, and probably assumes others do too.

This was my thinking too, must confess to similar behaviour in my youth, albeit without neighbours.

Thanks for confirming the technical side for me guys.

Because the OP is clearly civilised and the kid is almost certainly just being a kid. Ergo, it seems like one of those situations where saying something in a lighthearted way would seem the correct course of action. If the chap was some terrible oik then it strikes me the OP would have mentioned this but seems to have implied the opposite.

Maybe stick the URL to this thread under his wiper. He can then become aware that his noise is a little annoying and if it isn't essential to keeping the engine running he can temper it and at the same time he can post up some pictures and tell us what he's done so far with the car as everyone likes minis.

I'd go and see him and in a friendly manner, ask about his Mini and its engine. Get him to start it while you've your head under the bonnet and enquire whether he's got it set up right, talk a bit about the choke, idle speed, etc. etc. and see if you can't tweak it so repeated reving isn't required. You never know, he might appreciate your interest and knowledge.

I've got an A Series powered Minor and I give it a slight rev or two on fire up, but nothing like what it sounds he does. Sounds like he either needs to look at why it does if he doesn't rev it, has a mod which inhibits cold running or is a moron

hes a young lad, was every one here never young. i now realise what my neighbours must have thought 40 odd years ago about me. and thats when you could fit anything regarding exhausts to cars and bikes, just ask him nicely.
