Anyone's help on this would be hugely appreciated.

I have a 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 (colossal 150K miles). Bought it a few weeks ago. Last week it just would not start (very cold morning). Engine would turnover but just wouldn't fire up. I've also had, on occasion, error messages after starting the engine saying 'special programmes unavailable' (or something like that). Restarting the engine would often clear this.

So - this morning was a nightmare! Another cold morning and although the engine started I got an error stating "Transmission Failure, some gears unavailable" with an "F" showing where the gear number would normally be. Well I had in fact no gears at all as I could not get it out of "Park". I restarting loads of times (sometimes the engine wouldn't start at all similar to the previous week) and eventually it did start without the error message. I then drove to work and it was faultless....no problems at all.

It seems to hate cold mornings.

Does anyone recognise this fault? Can anyone recommend anything before I take it to a dealer...? All help very much appreciated. Thanks.

Could be anything, cold morning related, i would start with a new battery....

a poorly fitting tail light bulb was enough for my 2008 RRS to tell me every computer in the car was going wrong....

Go on the RRS forum. Find someone with an IID tool to read the faults for you.

I've just ordered the tool for myself as I thought it would be useful.

As above, the Disco/RR cars are very power hungry and sensitive to low power.

Battery, battery, battery!

Had this on my D3 which is the same vehicle underneath. Changed batteries to a Bosch 90Ah one & that was that.

battery disconnection & reset procedure is here - again the Disco 3 is basically the same vehicle under the skin so don't be alarmed!

Perfect. Great advice. Thanks guys. I took it to Rovertune and they also immediately said battery but convinced me I needed a proper Landrover battery. I'm impressed with these guys actually. If anyone's in the Reading area I would definitely recommend them. Mind you - the battery (including VAT & fitting) was £280!! Ouch.

Not sure why they said you need a Land Rover battery. LR don't make batteries.

I've just got one of these that has been recommended to me by the disco 3/4 electrics guru on the forum.

https://www.tayna.co.uk/EK950-Exide-Start-Stop-AGM... (This is for a D4 though - I think the D3 needs a different one due to the alternator being different) think it would depend which discovery your RRS is based on!

I've heard good things about Rovertune as well.

I have been using Guava (Now Hunters unfortunately) near Guildford and they have been very good.

£280? Did you get dinner and a hand job with that price?

£77 for the Tanya battery and 15 minutes of my time sorted it on my D3.

I would suggest you get the codes read to be sure, does the history show an alternator being changed?
The D3/4/RRS love a good healthy power supply and a dying battery or alternator can have them claiming they are dying with all the error messages coming up.

Has it got history of the autobox oil being changed, if not. You may need a torque converter in the next couple of years.
