okay, I nearly pulled the trigger on a 997 C4S 45k miles for £29.5, nice service history etc.
But it keeps nagging me that I can get a 997 C2S for 45k miles for £24/5k now is the 4S worth the extra £5k?
I realise it does look better from the back but as a drivers car is there any difference in performance etc?
cheers

Some will rave about the purity of steering in the 2S and how you can't possibly need any more traction (which I tend to agree with in fairness), while others will say how they appreciate the 'surefootedness' and extra weight over the front that a 4S gives you.
There's no right and wrong answers here, you're probably going to have to try them for yourself!
Oh and as we're talking Gen1s don't forget your Hartech fund

had both and really couldn't get away with the 4wd , It just didn't seem to do what I wanted it to , given the choice I would actually pay a premium for 2wd so if its saving £5k thats a win win situation in my eyes. If I was looking for 997 I'd consider both and buy the best example of either I could find.
Impossible to say which is best, they are actually very similar to drive. Some people will say they prefer C2 and others will point to the very clever awd system - which, in the UK, will be beneficial some of the time.
Does the 997 C4S have the wider body? If so it should hold its value better.

Yes it has the turbo body.
A 997.1 C2S was my first Porsche experience and i hated it! Felt so odd with no weight over the front. However, loved the look of the car and come the Gen 2 i had a C4S (the Gen 2 has the Turbo's 4WD, rather than the less sophisticated system in the Gen 1) which was much, much better to drive.
When it comes to the Gen 2, EVO rated the 4S over the 2S and it it was the first 4WD carrera to be quicker than its 2WD counterpart. I would thefore argue the purists should drive them before assuming...

4S will always be more desirable to the non purists and better resale value, some say that apart from weight issue 4s drives very similar to 2s as more power is distributed to the rear wheels.A 997.1 C2S was my first Porsche experience and i hated it! Keep in mind, its money that you'll get back (some of it anyway). But it keeps nagging me that I can get a 997 C2S for 45k miles for £24/5k now is the 4S worth the extra £5k?

In 3 years time you might sell a C4S for £3-4k more than you would a C2S. So in that respect, the 'cost' to you is actually £1-2k.
Those figures are made up - just making the point that its easy to forget that the premium will still be there when its time to sell on.
With this in mind (and assuming you don't have a particular preference either way), I'd do what someone has already said, which is consider both and buy the best one.
I owned a 4S some years ago and bought it having looked at both options and test driven both. In the end i bought it because at the time i worked in Switzerland part of the year and i liked the extra traction in the winter. I tracked it a couple of times in the UK and never felt it wasn't "pure" but then i am a very long way from a track day God. In the end I sold it as i didn't use it much and it just sat at the airport depreciating but it clearly hasn't depreciated much since i sold it - 911V sold mine for about 41K three years ago with about 20k on the clock. Have to think it would probably make 35k now (it had a great spec)!
