Long story short. Considering swapping my 2014 Boxster 2.7 for a 718.

Before pulling the trigger I called our BMW dealer (we also have an M135i) to enquire on M2 lead times (Q1 next year for anyone interested). While on the phone Mr BMW suggests an M4. Proceeds to offer me a truly fantastic deal on a new M4. The only stumbling block is the trade in price for my Boxster.

Boxsters similar to mine (year, mileage, spec etc) are up at OPC's for £35-£37k. Several valuation services have valued it for part-ex at £27-29k. However, Mr BMW says he's contacted two OPC's in their group and was offered £24k & £25k.

I appreciate dealers need to make money and will check and warranty my car before resale but £10k profit on a £35k car???

Should I expect a better part-ex against a new 718?

I just got 33.5k against a 991 for my 62 plate S with 26000 miles. You will almost certainly get a better deal at Porsche. Why don't you phone round a few dealers to ask them re trade-in or if they would buy it off you, otherwise you can always sell to we buy any car or similar?

ETA just seen it's now up at £39k so £5.5k margin,

Thanks Thorny. Just what I was hoping for. Haven't even approached my OPC yet as the BMW deal came as a bit of a surprise.

Hope you don't have to wait too long for the 991. cool

Also worth noting that trade-in values varied between 28-33.5k! All OPCs

Why not give Tom at Virgin 911 a call and ask how to give you a valuation.

They're having a laugh at £25k or less - unless it's got 100k on the clock.

Indeed very worth shopping around. I got quotes for my previous 911 which ranged from £56k (WBAC) to over 70k! Interestingly I contacted an OPC who offered me £65k, I then contacted the group buyer for the group that owned said OPC and he offered me 6k more!

Pretty sure OPC's should give you a price about £7-8k less than they can punt them on for?

Recently sold my 13 plate Cayman S to Stirlings in Cornwall. They gave me a better price than the PC where I was buying my 981 Spyder. They're a bit choosy as to what they buy, I think, and seem to go for high spec low mileage examples but might be worth a try to see if they're interested. You never know, they might already have someone interested in a car like yours. That must have been the case with mine as it sold within days.

At the 718 launch a fellow attendee told me he'd recently been approached out of the blue by his long term OPC salesman asking if he'd like to sell his 981. No mention of selling him a new car, which he found strange.

When he pushed his salesman, the guy told him they'd been told (by whom I don't know) to get their hands on as many 981 models as they can.

Now why would an OPC want loads of 981s sitting around when the 718 is just out? Makes no sense, especially when you'd think they'd have loads of 981s coming in on p/ex for a 718.

If many 981 owners do swap for a 718 that will surely depress 981 prices, for this year at least, as so many more 981s come to market at a similar time.

Interesting. Sounds like they'e trying to control supply of the 981. Probably so that they can avoid loads hitting the market at once and depressing prices.

I can see more 986 and 987 owners swapping for a 718 than 981 owners.

Not sure why an OPC wants 981s unless they thing they can make a decent profit from them - are they expecting prices to rise?

Quick update for anyone that's interested.

After contacting several OPCs (almost all of whom I might add were very prompt and courteous in their responses - apart from one who chatted about life in general for 20mins then never called me back with a value, and another who just emailed me a picture of a 718 Cayman with my current Boxster spec on it. Weird) the difference in values (car unseen to all of them) was fairly wide.

Values ranged from £25k to £28.5k. Guess where I'll be taking my business.

Conclusion: It pays to shop around. smile

Surely it depends on what deal you are going to get on the 718 though?

Doubt there will be any discounts with the 718 being a new model. I'm happy to be proved wrong!

Anyone manage any discount on their 718 order?
