New Zed owner........
Discussion
Just agreed the purchase of a 2011 E89 Z4 sDrive23i M Sport Highline after a great testdrive on Sunday.
Very happy indeed and childishly excited. Considered the larger 3.0i I6, but for what I need it for, the 2.5i was zingy, aurally satisfying and quick enough.
Collect on Saturday and will be my first I6 petrol BMW for 6yrs after a Brief foray with a 550i and oodles of I6 and 4-cylinder dervs.
It's going to be my station (and airport) car as an antidote to the family F25 X3 2.0d SE. Will post pics as soon as I have them.

A Zed for a "station car"? A case of how the other half live?
Seriously congrats OP, not driven one but am a massive fan of the Z4, and can attest for the engine, as I have one in the front of the 125i - which funnily enough spends most of it's time at an airport. Lovely and smooth, with a very satisfying snarl when you poke it with a big stick.
Pics definitely required

Station car FFS - surely take the car and forget the train!
Hard to beat an N/A straight 6 RWD BMW - mind you I am biased as I currently have 2 of them!
But OP, why a 2.3 - do it properly and get a 3.0!
But despite that, enjoy yours because there won't be any more the way things are going!

Yeah, it is a bit OTT as a station car but I was getting fed up in the winter of not being able to see where I was going (7miles of unlit country roads and a 2004 Polo wasn't a great combo) and mixed into that, fortnightly (and sometimes weekly) trips to LCY and LHR had me wanting a bit more comfort & luxury.
Completely understand the 23i is a bit non-PH and I did agonise over that and the 30i. Normally I would got for the biggest engine every time (evidenced by lot of my car history [cough] 550i) but what the Polo has taught me over the last 9months or so is that a dearth of bhp can actually be fun in itself. I never really felt like I NEEDED anything more than the 23i had to offer on the testdrive. It was great fun revving it out and feeling it pick up its skirt at 4.5k rpm and from that perspective, it reminded me a bit of my old S2000 - just with a more sonerous delight! That I6 has an absolute beaut of a noise and, at the end of the day, this is "just" my station car. It doesn't need to set my pants or its rear tyres alight. There is a certain pleasure to be had from working the engine hard and leaning on the chassis. Anyway, when did 0-60 in 6.6secs become slow!
Hopefully I won't regret my decision, but I bought both on condition (brand new alloys & tyres, mint interior, excellent exterior), local BMW dealer therefore AUC warranty and just enough toys to keep me happy and in any event, a bundle more in terms of EVERYTHING that I had with the Polo.
