Sub £20k Sports Car
Discussion
I'm looking for a usable classic sports car (convertible) for the summer. Absolute maximum budget is £20k and preferably a bit less.
I have chance of a very nice TR6 and I'm on the verge of going for it.
I don't want a modern classic such as an MX5,Boxster or Z3/4. Other than an MGC I can't think of anything else that would fit the bill. AH too expensive, MGB no improvement on the TR.
Have I missed anything ?

Think it depends what type of sports car you are after and what sort of thrills you want.
TR6 prices have been rising steadfastly, I doubt you'd loose anything on one. Might even continue to rise, although they must plateau at some point.
Thinking British:
-TVR's of lots of different types and ages
-Lotus of some description
-MG RV8
-HMC if you are lucky, but maybe out of budget
-Stag, but maybe not sports car enough
-GT6
-TR7/7 V8
-Caterham
-Must be some kind of Healey or Sunbeam I'd have thought
Non British:
-Corvette
-Alfa Romeo
-Datsun

Mine too, well to an extent. But I guess it depends what the op means by "classic".The TVR is still rather modern in many ways. And is certainly quite a different car to TR6, which is essentially the last variant of a 1950's sports car from Triumph.
Some good suggestions.
TVR did cross my mind, I've had a few in the past, including two Griffs. Not sure if they're a bit modern, but a 4.5 Chimaera was one of the nicest cars I've owned. I may go and have a look at one this week.
Alfa Spider is another great suggestion. Jensen Healey likewise.
Back to Car and Classic.

What about an Alfa Spider, may just get an early boat tail for your budget but certainly a mid 70's series 2 kamm tail with spare change for some nice Alfaholics goodies!
Alfa Spyder a great choice! The noise, the interior, if you can find a good early one it's surely got to be a good investment too.I'm surprised nobody has suggested a Morgan...

Or you could look at a cheap Cobra replica

That TVR Griffith looks fantastic!
Sadly that is about double my budget for a toy, so I have a Z4 Coupe!
A mate of mine buys and sells a few classics, and keeps telling me I ought to buy one - he has an early Primrose Yellow TR6 on wires at the moment that does look lovely!
But I keep thinking I am getting better than E-type performance for a Capri price, so I think I just need to hang on to it - one day!!

Mercedes Benz r107 or r129?
Best suggestion yet. Forget the R107, You will get a mint R129 500 or even 600 for that sort of money.Gassing Station | Classic Cars and Yesterday's Heroes | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
