So today after 6.5 years of owning my MY2010 Vantage I discovered that it can self lock at the most importune time.

Circumstances were that me and Mrs Steve went out in the car and as I drove away I noticed the little red security light at the left hand side of the instrument cluster remained lit after pulling away. This was not down to the tracker thing, I can say that categorically, it went off again after a few seconds.

Anyway, she wanted to go to a shopping centre in the next town along. She said she needed her purse from the boot, so After stopping I alighted from the car, engine off, leaving the Fob in the ignition lock as she was in the car, closed the drivers door and walked to the back of the car.

I opened the boot and found her purse, whereby she had also alighted from the car and closed her door also. I automatically closed the boot lid down, and went to the drivers door to get back in th car.

I was somewhat surprised to find the drivers door was locked - as was the passengers door and the boot also.

Obviously the car had self applied the locks, locking me out of th car but with the key fob in the ignition. Needless to say some mechanics in a garage right next to me found this somewhat amusing and chortled somewhat whistle

Anyway, got the help of a relative and was driven home to get the spare fob, retuned and successfully opened the door, saving the day.

So my point is that I was totally unaware that Astons self lock, even if the fob is in the ignition. Or has something gone wrong somewhere? Is self locking a normal feature of the car?

I have never seen that little red light come on before, is it just a security light or something else, perhaps warning me of imminent doom with the car?

Any thoughts appreciated please, I'm due to worry about something on the car, it's been a while! smile

Hi Steve,

Not the same fault at all but have a look for a thread of mine a few weeks ago along the lines of V8 Vantage starting issues (Can't be sure of what I titled it) Problem was solved with a new docking station for the key, car would not wake up at all let alone start and all I did have was a red flashy light on the left hand side of the display - could be a clue? Maybe yours didn't know there was a key inside in the same way mine didn't know there was key inserted.

Hi Mark thanks for that, I will certainly watch that one.

I could not replicate the self lock and really have no idea why it happened.

I'll bear your suggestion in mind if it comes back, thanks.

Hey Steve,

Almost exact thing happened to me this weekend. 2009 DB9volante. Was washing car. Fob was in ignition but not pushed all the way in. Driver side door wasn't closed all the way so I bumped it with my hip to close. Continued waxing car. When done went to open door and found I was locked out! Both doors and boot. No big deal. Went in the house and got my glass key - Nope! I think the one in the ignition was cancelling it out or something. Had to call the autoclub to come open the door. Not sure on coupes but the volante he inserted a bladder between the passenger front and rear windows. Inflated it till there was about 1/4 inch gap. Then stuck a pole in there, grabbed the handle, and unlatched the door.

Has me a bit nervous now. Is there a way to reset anything that may have gone awry? Unplug the battery and let it sit for a bit?

I didn't know you could lock yourself out, so I'll definitely be more careful in the future!

I've only had my V8VS a month but that red light on the left of the cluster has been there since I picked it up and goes off after a few minutes of driving, so would be interested if anyone found out what it is

I had the red light staying on when the tracker had lost signal (on the Isle of Skye) for a considerable period of time. Started getting VM's and SMS' to confirm I still had the car.

Dealer advised me to always have the little emergency key in your pocket just in case! Never had to use it though.

On a somewhat related subject, does anyone know what happens if you remove the ECU key whilst driving?

I have no tracker subscription on mine., so it could be something to do with it though.
