Hi Guys, possibly asking this in completely the wrong section however, my Family are looking for a new car as we now have an ever growing labrador that pushes us to get an estate or 4 x 4.
Have any of you had experiences of either? And if so how was your 'real world' feeling of that car?
Expected running costs? (We do roughly 8k miles per year). Particularly servicing/common issues.

My dad is really feeling the v8 itch HOWEVER, 3 have been stolen locally in the last year (and I live in Rutland!).
Are there any preventative measures to take in relation to this other than a tracker?

Any further advice or questions?
Sorry if the info above is short...

They're not really comparable. Two completely different beasts.

RS4 every single time. No questions asked.

Its just our A5 Sportback (3L (245) Tdi S-tronic Quattro) is getting on (12 plate). And need a little more space - not sure the boot is big enough or not though? Still seems small!

So buy a roof box for when you need extra space...?

You've not met my mum and sister, they would run you over to protect our dogs! lol
I genuinely think the only reason the mortgage is paid is so that the dogs can live a comfortable life - they eat better food than we do!

We had a subaru a few years ago - dad fancies it as the more successful mans subaru (as we can't afford an RS6 wink ) he fancies something fun for his 50th!!!

I had an S4 Avant and changed to an X5. Doing lots of motorway miles and the X5 is fantastic for doing that. Nice high up position to see well into the distance. In terms of carry capability the X5 is marginally bigger and more comfortable if you are carrying 3 adults in the rear as opposed to 3 kids.

Now I'm doing predominantly A road miles I'm back in a small powerful petrol, as the X5 despite it's pace can't overcome the laws of physics either going round corners or stopping. It's also (likely) a diesel and sounds crap.

Get the RS4 unless your daily drive is around the M25.

I may be able to help with this a little. I had an RS5 do not a great deal different to the A5 SB in terms of space. I bought my RS4 as we got a dog and I hear they're not too fond of being locked away in the boot of a coupe.

Costs: I do 6500-7000 miles a year and tracking my fuel costs through fuelly I'm averaging 20mpg. Around town is probably about 16, motorway journeys at 70 close to 30, motorway journeys at 90 about 25. Mines in for its second service today at £380 ish at a main Audi dealer. With my RS5 and roughly the same mileage I replaced the front pads at 3 years old, front tyres were done at 20k, rears were still originals! So costs very low indeed for a powerful V8.

Common issues: suspension knocking slightly at the front. This is a feature apparently. Other than that I've not had any issues.

Boot space: it's not enormous but it takes two dogs comfortably. I took a couple of friends up to the airport recently and it took their 3 suitcases. If space is really an issue perhaps it might be worth looking at an early C7 RS6 if funds can stretch, higher residuals will probably soften the blow.

Feeling: in comfort mode it just potters around finding 7th at about 35mph, bury your foot and power is there. The exhaust note (get one with sports exhaust) on shifts in sublime. 40-70 in sport mode for overtaking is rapid. Quattro keeps it very stable, it's possible to get it to slide but it doesn't ever feel like one end or the other is going to let go completely. In the wet very few cars can touch it from a standstill.

Security: I can't really help there, I have at the request of my insurance company a tracker fitted to mine. I guess buy yourself some gap insurance just in case!

I love mine, it will be going in the next few months as it's time to change but I'm sure I will miss the combination of practicality and performance that it offers.

I wish it was for me personally - but unfortunately it's for dad (although my mum drives it most the time) we have had 3 diesels on the trot now (e46 320d, 11 plate A6 3L Manual (very last of old shape), A5 3L Tdi Quattro SB.

Dad just fancies petrol again (prior to that we had Subaru Impreza and Prior to that a V6 mondeo estate - one of my dads favourite cars) , misses noise and sense of occasion as we only do around 6-7k miles a year! Dervs are quite easy to live with but due to our mileage they throw their toys out their pram every now and again!!!

This is the car we are looking at:
http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/a...
We don't live far away at all (helps I work at the dealership too driving )
This is pretty Q specced car only criticism is no soft close doors or keyless go but that just being mega picky. Sports Pack and Pano roof with upgraded sound is nice though.
Other than that A5 is on 42k miles on 12 plate so going to get hung out to dry on trade value!!!

We have a border and a Fox Red Labrador - but I think the boot is big enough as its a bit taller than the SB which is our issue with the Lab.

That's nice but I would say it's a tad overpriced.

I don't believe soft close doors were an option when I specced mine. Advanced key was £750 I think, I got it because I had it on my previous RS5 but there are quite a few out there without as a result of the exorbitant price. Mine is similar spec except I don't have sunroof and have black pack to compliment the Sepang blue.

Should be plenty big enough for the dogs. Take them in to the dealership and bung them in and see!

This can't be a real thread, either you want a V8 Estate car and the costs associated with it or you want a diesel 4X4.

Its more down to the fact its replacing two cars (the A5 and a Mitsubishi animal - for shooting etc), whether the RS4 can cope - and the security issues associated with it are more of a worry tbh, would need a tracker at minimum.

3 Rs4s have been stolen locally since january and it just worries us slightly our drive isn't gated or anything and is just slightly off a main road.

That said X5 is boring to drive in comparison to an x5

Surely a BMW X5 is a pretty tasty theft target?

Get Get grip, who wears the pants?

An RS4 will hold it's value better than an X5. All the Man maths you'll ever need!
